Civil Society of Engineers Hard to describe Internet
Basically they are responsible for ensuring that the infrastructure of america is safe. Right now they say they need lots of money to fix everything. It's an estimate--like the army or navy or any other government agency if you have a job, you will be paid regardless if anything is awarded or not. It's more altruistic than the military is though. But it is still run like that a lot of the times. If you fit in, you are part of the family, but if you don't, you are not really welcome. They don't tell you this in college. They hype up the glamour of tall big structures and all that, not really emphasizing the business administration aspects. Well, they should, because engineering and business adminstration are pretty closely related. If more engineering students realized this either they would get out early or else pursue a business degree. A business degree isn't really needed, but that is the philosohy. Business, and preferably BIG business. So things sort of head in an upwardly rather than downwardly flow. You have to figure that out. Of course, on the inside, the money is so good that when there is so much of it, all you think of doing is spending and living well. But of course, you also have to fit it. That fitting in part is everything. So this may be an unfair accusation, but it is like being part of a country club. And that is part of the reason why there's still a bit of unpopularity with regard to engineering, is because the day to day atmosphere of designing can be quite thrilling, yet nevertheless, outside of that domain, they feel underappreciated and thanked. But at the same time, management on the whole is so into efficiency and conformity that it does foster limited thinking ability outside the box. Generally what gets noticed is what is the grandest tallest largest most expensive most prestigious greatest technical challenge greatest impact shock value for news. That is not exactly representative of main street America, but it caters to the upwardly flow, the dynamics of multinational engineering corporations. So this is not a complaint, but an observation, about why this favors such conformist behavioral mentality. And why if you don't fit it, you should realize that it is not you, it's them because there's not a lot of room up there, despite how glamourous it looks from a distance.
