BUT I don't understand why someone who wants to get out of a car payment messes with a Mercedes -any Mercedes - as a replacement. You must have had some equity in the car. Why didn't you simply advertise it privately and sell it, then -for an interim period - buy a used Chevy or Ford for 8 or 10k and drive it for a while? Just curious.

Reason I didn't buy from a Mercedes dealership, bottom line, the price. I was offered about the same at the local Mercedes dealership for my trade, but it seemed that the sales guy didn't really take me seriously. I was told it would be a losing trade at the Mercedes dealership, and just keep my S class. I am in between jobs right now, have a daughter in college, and am trying to tighten up my belt, just to survive. I needed to get rid of a debt, so I could keep my daughter in her car and school.

You should really detail the Mercedes you bought and sell it. Carmax like all other used car lots either purchases cars that new car dealers want to wholesale or goes to auctions. They can't provide any information on the cars they sell except for ones that an individual sells to them and they are no more familiar with a Jag, Mercedes, or Rolls than they are with a Chevy. They may be a good resource for someone interested in a late model run of the mill American car but are a poor choice if you are looking for a luxury import. You also said that they paid you much less than wholesale for your S Model. Did you attempt to trade it in at a Mercedes dealer? I'm curious why you messed with Carmax in the first place when you wanted something other than an Impala or Taurus.

What in God's name are you still harping on CARMAX for? Obviously Carmax isn't an expert on Mercedes automobiles and if you are what are you doing dealing with them? It would be interesting to find out why you dealt with them in the first place since you obviously have a relationship with authorized Mercedes dealerships and servicing. Anyway you were the one who made a mistake dealing with someone other than a Mercedes dealership for a vehicle that for years has been one of the least reliable cars on the road. I don't feel sorry for you in the least. Sell the obviously unreliable car you bought without any service history, name of former owner, or anything else and visit your friendly local Mercedes dealer. At least you will get a certified car and a usuable warranty. You'll need one.

The car was received out of the Carmax service center on Wednesday afternoon, that was 6 days total that they held my car. The car was driven yesterday to California from Vegas for a test run. A little way before the produce check point on the 15 freeway, I heard a loud thump and a bumping noise that sounded like a flat tire. I was terribly scared. I pulled off an off ramp to examine the tires. No flat. I looked under the car, to discover that the rear engine cover was falling off. I called the Carmax service center and reported to them about the engine cover falling off under the vehicle. The manager of the service center would not take responsibility for this situation, and offered nothing to help. He blamed the Mercedes service center who had inspected the car for me a whole week before, and prior to the Carmax service situation. Bottom line, nothing fell off the car after Mercedes completed an inspection. In all my prior dealings of the Mercedes service center, I never had a problem. All the issues occurring, seem to land with Carmax and their inability to properly service a luxury vehicle. The new engine cover is going to cost 48.00 for the part, plus the cost of installation. I should also note that when I picked up my Mercedes from Carmax, I bumped into a nice young man, who had just purchased a Mercedes C class from Carmax. He had only owned his car for a day, and had to return the car because he said the car started shaking and rattling from side to side. I felt very sorry for this young kid. I told him that he must take the vehicle to a Mercedes certified mechanic or he could have more issues and problems.

I can't possibly imagine why someone who is obviously familiar with Mercedes automobiles and their service requirements would go to a used car lot for another Mercedes. Why didn't you go to a Mercedes dealer? They have plenty of certified used vehicles and would have traded your S model for a cheaper car. I purchase Chevies at a Chevy dealership, Cadillacs at a Cadillac dealership and so on. Obviously Carmax and the rest of the used car lots aren't experts in Mercedes servicing. Did you ever think of driving the E model to the Mercedes dealership BEFORE you purchased it and paying someone there to look it over? Next time deal with someone authorized and trained to handle the cars you are interested in.
