Wrong analogy

Your analogy doesn't work because you are comparing an apple with an orange. What do you get from buying a car? The ownership of the TANGIBLE car and can be turned over to you completely after the payment. What do you get from opening a bank account? Your bank account is not tangible and cannot turn over to be yours completely. Also, you are NOT buying a bank account, but you are using their service.

Anyway back to the topic, I agree that banks are looking for a new way to make money without going against the law. This is one way for them to make money by forcing any "free checking" account holder to switch the account type. Is it Ethical in the sense of consumer? No. But is it legal? Yes.

When you said you were not "notified" did you ever get a bank statement every month from the bank regardless media (paper or electronic)? If you have ever gotten it in a form of paper, they usually attach the new policy with the statement in a small brochure that doesn't look like an important thing to read. Most people who don't look at the statement or read anything will throw the paper away. If you have electronic version, I believe they will send you a letter stating about changing your account type and ask you to contact them before a certain of time; otherwise, they will automatically switch your bank account type. I got 2 of them because I have 2 bank accounts with the same bank.

you need to read all the inserts that come with your statements, paper or electronic. You received notification that they were going to change the terms of your account on a certain date. By continuing to use your account you accepted these terms which included the monthly fee. Not a ripoff, just you not paying attention to the information the bank sent you.

Just about every "free" account in the last couple of years as very specific terms to keep it free.  Such as Minimum Balance in your account, Minimum amount of a Direct Deposit, using your debit card a specific number of times, or a combination of all of those.  There may also be terms in how many times you can make a Teller transaction, talk to customer service over the phone, or the number of checks you write.  So what was required to keep this account free, and did you do that?

You were starting to be charged in Nov 2011.  When did you open the account?  When did you realize they were charging you?
