U Haul is a ripoff; Questionable practices. Portage, Pennsylvania
I bought a car in Pennssylvania and rented a U-Haul auto carrier to bring it to Florida. I picked the trailer up on Thursday morning and got to Florida on Friday night. I turned the trailer in on Saturday at the location on Cortez Blvd, Brooksville, Fl.
Twenty days later, I received a call from U-Haul International regarding me needing to return the trailer so they could close out the contract. I raced to the U-Haul dealer (just happened to be in the car I had trailered home, already had the new title back from the state, plates, etc). I asked about the trailer which I had returned some almost 3 weeks earlier. Of course, I waited for nearly 40 minutes while the ONE MAN team helped other customers.
When I asked him about the trailer(I still had my copy of the receipt), he calmly stated, "They already called here, there's nothing you can do until we figure it out." But there was something I could do, I called my bank and kept any charges beyond my rental agreement of $313.20 being added by U-Haul. My concern was that since I used a bankcard backed by my bank accounts, charges could keep coming in. U-Haul international finally did get it straight but it's things like that which can make a person edgy.
One other thing. Years ago, I was trailering some items north. The U-Haul dealer remarked that they usually had things come south, not go north. He said that it overstocked him with items. I told him that I wasn't going to fill the trailer and I would use the extra room to take overstock things north.
We figured my trip route and with two stops just off the interstate, I delivered Hand trucks, furnture covers, etc and the credits i got from the receiving locations gave me enough that I actually got almost $50 more than I paid for the rental. Not a bad deal for just listening and offering to do a favor.
