I applied with toy r us online they asked my date of birth my ss# and if i was a criminal or on welfare did i get WIC did i receive food stamps I have a BS. Degree in Human Resouce mgt. and was refused a job interview for Human Resouce Asst.

I think these hiring practices go completely unrestricted and are in voilation of labor laws

Toys R Us prefers welfare people

When I was hired, I learned that Toys R Us gets $3,000 for each person who is on welfare.  Thats mostly why they ask.  The state pays them for taking people off of welfare to ease the burden on the states budget.

Haha! That's not why you didn't get a job.

They ask everyone those questions. It's about the company getting tax breaks & stuff. The only thing that keeps you from getting an interview with TRU is either the position is not open or your failed the assessment. Failing the assessment is common. I applied for a different position while I worked there and failed it the second time I took it! It's all common sense, but presenting yourself too strongly will fail you. Also, they have a habit of posting the positions on the website that aren't available. They're too lazy to update that, it seems. They aren't being racist or discriminating. Apply anywhere and they will ask you those questions. If you read the part before it, it is usually all voluntary information and will not hurt your application. Most companies will hire people that have minor crimes on their record if it has been long enough, but I'm not sure about TRU because you work so closely with children and pregnant women every day. Plus don't waste your degree there. They promote and hire people with less education than the 16 year old sales associates they hire. It stinks.

I have several years experience in Unicru, that is the system Toys R Us uses to take their online applications. The background check is done online through Unicru as well. The questions about welfare ect. are optional work tax credit questions. They are not mandatory, try reading the application thoroughly before answering. If you recieved government assistance and are hired the company recieves tax credits, so you actually have an advantage over a non recipient. The background check is not conducted until you are offered a job, because you never got an interview you didn't know this. There must be rigorous background checks because you are dealing with large sums of money and more importantly children, you can't have pedophiles and perverts working around children. The last thing to clear up is that if you do not score high enough on the survey, which you clearly did not you cannot be hired no matter what. There is no point of mailing a paper resume, it is done online, if you don't pass you can't move forward, I know you think your over-qualified for the job because you have a BS, but that means nothing since you clearly have problems reading directions. And finally you probablly would not want the HRA job since it is only a full time job in certain stores, and is not full time HRA responsibilities, you may look over apps, interview and train two days a week but your basically a sales associate the rest of the week, and $12.50 an hour is probablly a bit high, we paid our HRA under $8.00

I was amazed the endless personal and financial questions toys r us asked me online in the application process i was appying for human resource asst. i asked for 12.50 and hour i was asked if i collected welfare aid for food etc and this is standard for all retail chains now just be reveiwed for and interview i mailed a resume (of which i hold a degree BA in human resource management) to the actual store in n.j. and no one called me for an interview the company assures me i have no problem or risk that my ss# and date of birth etc are in their database but MAYBE THEY SHOULD REPENT FROM TAKING DOWN AN INTEROGATION BEFORE THEY CONSIDER AN APPLICANT THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS AND I FEEL VIOLATED i want a response and revenge

They asked the criminal question because they do not want to hire a convict.

They have that right. They asked the WIC and welfare question because employers recieve a tax credit for hiring individuals who recieve social services. Those questions are typically voluntary. They asked your ssn to verify your right to work, and your birthday to verify you were old enough to work. All of those questions were legal. Did they happen to be hiring for an HR assistant when you applied? How do you know they were hiring? Had the application period closed? Did you all to make sure they recieved your application or did you just not hear anything from them? My guess, and this is just my humble opinion. They probably denied your application because of a problem with a background check or because they felt you were overqualified, or you did not have enough actual work experience (a degree does not always equal experience). Good luck on your job hunt! I wish you the best!

This is pretty common

I used to work as an assistant store manager for a different toy chain, and our paper applications requested the same things (the company had a set up for online applications, but in 8 years I never saw anyone who was hired that way, nor did I ever see any even forwarded to us). I think it is a pretty standard thing to see on a retail company application. Were you refused the interview for not filling out the application correctly? I know I never (willingly)interviewed anyone who did not fill out the application correctly, and certainly never recommended them for hire.
