First of all if you are taking care of a family member that is ill and you mentioned it to your manger you could have the right to take FMLA intermittant leave. If you can not speak to your supervisor then speak to the HR dept. If you are just late with and attitude about your job then you did not want to work anyway. The hours are part of the job and that is what you signed up for so call HR and explain the misunderstanding instead of failing to communicate effectively?
Did you call in to say you will be late? Did you get a final coaching session? Did you show up late after your final coachying session?
Do not just complian take care of crap...
