I sent in a poem to poetry.com that I thought was pretty good. A few weeks later I received a first-class letter stating that my poem had made it to the semi-finals and that a book would be published containing my poem for no fee. But regardless, my poem would be entered into a contest with the top prize of $1000 being awarded, and if I wanted a copy of the book containing my published poem, it would cost me at least $49.95.
Immediately I 'smelled a rat' and knew that this company was running a scam. So I took it one step further and wrote a second poem tearing them apart. And guess what? It was selected to be published as well. The content of this silly poem and their email response is below. Please notice that their response contained so many spelling errors that it was just ridiculous that a poetry web site couldn't even get the grammar written correctly. Needless to say, avoid this scam site altogether!

duping people into buying your fictitious poetry books,
unless the writer pays in full, his entry is lost,
and all of his hard work and hopes are just tossed
what you do to people is hardly considered nice,
but certainly one day you will certainly pay the price,
and get your come-upppance with a biblical plague of lice
