I am a Geek Squad Agent at a store in California (silicon valley area).. although I don't know the specifics of your case and I'm only hearing your side of the story.. what your telling me does not appear to be per company policy & could potentially involve employee fraud. I would contact Geek Squad corporate (not the store) directly at 1-800-geek-squad to explain what happened & resolve the issue to your satisfaction.. I would give both the names of the agent & manager you spoke with...there is also a 30day satisfaction on in-home services.. I would also recommend requesting a differn't tech come out for the "redo" session - although you may have issues with your local store/ geek agent .. the corporate office takes "cust sat" (espcially on in-home service very seriously) Geek Squad does not charge an "hourly fee" for most of it's services - it's job based for example in your case you were quote $69 to make disks, it does not matter if it takes the Tech in your home 6hrs to do it on your slow PC or he does it "in store" and brings them to you.. Geek Squad is 95% job based - NOT hourly. so the comments "used up all my time" is incorrect.. there is no time limit.. (if for some weird reason it was going to take 50 hours to make the disks the store would say "we can't do it" and refund the $69 - they have to be profitable) the only time hourly billing would come into play is for training /education issues (" teach me how to use a digital camera with my PC or how to use Quickbooks etc) for these type of issues it's generally 1-to-1 in front of the PC both explaining & showing a customer what to do... HOWEVER - you (as a customer) must clearly define BEFORE the time begins what are your goals what you want to achieve & both must agree .. geek agents (or you as the customer at the 30min 1/2 way mark should "check-in" to ensure things are going ok and a 15min warning before the time ends) Not getting a reciept or comments like "he would make one up" indicate improper paperwork.. or possilby the employee pocketing the extra $$$ and not reporting it to his employer (I would expect the geek agent to charge you the regular retail price for the actual CD media - so I'm not sure why this was "free") again I would follow up with Geek Squad corporate at 1-800-geek-squad.. with any huge company (best buy has 800+ stores) people are going to run into problems & report them to sites like this one.. What to do to solve problems at Best Buy if your not happy with what one employee at a specific stores says.. ask to speak with the "manager on-duty" (MOD) if they don't support you.. say "OK" and LEAVE THE STORE.*** (see below for why) Callback the next day and ask what the general manager's first/last name is.. and when he will be in - then Come into the store and speak with the person directly..) if no results .. call customer service (1-888-best-buy) if still no results.... call the corporate main phone# ask to speak with the "Executive relations team" (they handle when Issues unresolved from corp customer service - but you need to have a case# or spoken with customer service first)... If your issue still isn't resolved Best Buy is a Member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) File a complaint with them.. ***Why do you say leave the store? above*** I say LEAVE THE STORE.. because if the MOD (manager on duty) disagrees at that moment your waisting your time.. the problem wont be solved today.. and your emotionally involved /not thinking clearly.. the dirty little secret is that the MOD wants you to get upset, to raise your voice in the store.. he will then politely say 'sir could you please calm down or I'm asking you to leave, your distrubing the other guests at our store" if you say "I don't care.. Let the other customers hear me.. Best buy s*cks" the Manager will then call 911 - The police will arrive.. they will inform you that it's private property.. the store asked you to leave and you refused (possibly cited for criminal tresspassing or a do not come back order) and they will be escorting you out... right now.. if you say anything.. or resist you can be arrested and spend 48hrs (yes 2 days) in a jail cell (resisting arrest, insulting a police officer etc) - In this post Sept 11th zero tolerance world -I've seen it happen many times. Keep cool, be friendly polite but state your dis-satisfaction & stick to resolving the issue

We just purchased a new Compaq and there is NO software whatsoever. We made a recover disc on our own as soon as we hooked up the computer.

I can only speak about the HP system I just bought about 2 weeks ago. It has a partition on the hard drive that could be used for recovering. I had to burn a recovery CD (to start the recovery tools programs) and a separate program recovery CD. Alot of companies are not including recovery CD with their product anymore. Althoough one can be ordered.

Many, if not most new PCs do not come with recovery disks. Commonly, the manufacturer places a recovery partition on the hard drive. You may, or may not be able to create CDs or DVDs from this partition, but they are not provided. I installed a new HP this weekend, and I had to create the DVDs myself, and it WAS a fairly lengthy deal. On the other hand, it is such a simple process, the OP should have been able to do it himself, and GeekSquad should have told him that. Gateway (currently) not only has you do it yourself, they provide 6 blank CDs with their packaging.

First he told me I should have recovery disk?? a Recovery disk will come with your PC. if you bought a HP or a Dell compaq they come with a recovery disk, so you can format or restore your pc. this guy totally took Advantage of you. it is so easy to hook up a pc, everything fits into its own connector!! thats why i build and fix my own pc's in my home. i am self taught from reading and trying stuff on my own. you should go back and tell and say why did you need to make this recovery CD when the pc i bought came with one in software bundle? every pc built by HP,COMPAQ,DELL,GATEWAY WILL come with a recovery disc to format or restore or repair windows. i would never let thses IDIOTS touch MY COMPUTER EVER. i was just at bestbuy lastnight buying a high speed 2.0 usb card for my pc, and one of the floor reps said hey let geek squad install it. i said no THEY ARE IDIOTS i will do it my self for ((FREE)). HE SIAD IT ONLY COST 69$ i said screw that il do it for free its so easy just insert into the pci slot and fasten down your done.
