In 1999 my fiance bought a brand new Escort. She kept up the proper factory-recommended maintenance and has kept a doccumented history of such. With the car came a 36,000 mi. warranty. Pretty much standard. At 49,600 miles as she was turning into her place of employment, the car suddenly and without warning shut off and refused to start.

Liz works at a radio station as a sports commentator and is often there ALONE as she was this particular night. I live 100 miles away and received a call from her, very distraght as she was stranded late at night (the station is in a very rural and remote location) with no way home. When I reached the station I determined that it there was probably some kind of timing problem as the car would not start no matter what I tried so the next day the car was towed to a local Ford dealership.

What the dealership determined was that the crankshaft had moved forward a quarter of an inch, taking out a major electrical sensor and breaking several teeth off the camshaft timing gear. Now anyone with even a rudimentry understanding of current mechanical standards will realize that todays enginens are made to last into the hundreds of thousands of miles with proper care and maintenance. This type of stuctural failure Mus be the result of a design flaw. Such was admitted by everyone we spoke to at Ford and yet Ford would do nothing to help Liz to defray the $1800 cost it would take to recover her car. In fact one of the people at Ford Financing said, and I qoute, "Ford is BIG BUSINESS and unfortunately, they just don't care about you."

One commercial during a Nascar race costs maybe ten times what Liz makes in a year and yet Ford couldn't see their way clear to help a single mom who is working two jobs (one of which she consequently lost as a result of this) to help pay for what was clearly a design flaw on their part.

I myself own a Ford, but I will never purchase another.
