Fleet Credit Card Services Fleet-Still charging fees after they were supposed to have closed my account ripoff Wilmington Delaware
I called Fleet on January 15, 2004 to close my account after having paid the balance in full. I was given a confirmation number and was told it was closed and I should receive my letter.
On February 9, 2004, I receive another statement from them. It states that I now owe a $29 over the limit fee. Of course I immediately call the "Customer Service" line and get a somewhat rude lady on the line who tells me that I paid the card off during the middle of the billing cycle, and the fee was assessed at the end dude to the fact that I was over the limit in the beginning of January. I said okay, but why would one of your representatives tell me that it would be closed and I will receive my letter. She told me that she wish she knew who it was because "they shouldn't have told me that". I simply stated that they should honor the account close confirmation number because I paid off my balance and was told that the account was closed. She consented that she would go ahead and put a closeout letter in the mail, but I was still expected to pay the fee. (Makes it sound like a closeout letter doesn't mean much). I did, however, just peacefully end the conversation with her with the attitude that I would just go ahead and pay the fee.
However, I decided to NOT give up so easy. I called back and got another person on the phone. He consented to adjust the fee, and close the account. He was more professional, but still told me that just because an account is closed, they can still charge fees?!
I write this report just to give warning to anyone else that it seems just because you pay it off, it doesn't mean you are off the hook with them. Besides, based on comments I have read from this site in the past, I almost expected something like this. Also, just because I was told that I wouldn't have to pay the fee and my account would be closed, I still am not going to trust that it is over with. We will have to wait and see.

2/17/2004, I got my letter of account closing form Fleet today. However, since the last time I wrote, I had noticed a $29 charge on my checking account that was a payment to Fleet. This was posted on the day that I spoke with the first person I spoke with at Fleet (the unhelpful one). I think either she took a payment from me because she said I owe it, or the payment I was going to make online when I thought I wasn't going to fight the charge got posted despite the fact I never finalized it on the payment screen. The second person I spoke with who reversed the over the limit fee apparently did so, so now I have a -$29 balance with them. Hoping all is finished with fleet,
