Ian Morrison signed a liability waiver with Dollar Rental System, Inc, (Tulsa, Oklahoma), Oct 1 to rent a car for one week.

His waiver relieved Dollar Rental Systems of all liability for his one week in Florida(Tampa Airport) They billed him an additional $25 per day AFTER he signed the waiver soley because he is 24 and 1/2 years old.

IF a rental business is not at risk, why should one group of drivers pay extra risk? The worst accidents are caused by drunk drivers and drug users but car rentals do not survey drunk drivers or drug users...

I consider this more than badbusiness; to collect money for risk not taken. It is unfair business...

thank you,

This is an example of how uneducated and ignorant some consumers are.  You stated that "if a rental business is not at risk, why should one group of drivers pay extra risk?".

When the customer adds the LDW (or loss damage waiver), they are waiving THEIR financial responsibility for damages to the vehicle.  If anything happens to the car, regardless of fault, the customer does not pay a penny for the car's damages.  (given there's no contract violation)  Who assumes that responsibity instead?  DTAG (Dollar) does.   Hence, the LDW does not "relieve Dollar of all liability" as you claim.  The LDW relieves the CUSTOMER of their financial responsibity for damages to the vehicle.

When an inexperienced driver rents that car, there is an increased risk that something will happen to the car.  This is a calculated risk based on statistics.  So, the car rental company's risk is actually increased two fold because they (the company- not the renter) are covering the damages that may happen to the car.

Your insurance company works in much the same way.  Younger drivers pay a premium.  People who have many tickets or accidents pay more because they are more of a risk to the ins. company.    The insurance company can't exactly say they will charge more if you test positive on a drug test or if you're an alcoholic.  That's just an absurd thing for you to even mention.    And you are very incorrect to claim that the "worst accidents are caused by drunk drivers and drug users."  What about all the accidents caused by people paying attention to the phone instead of the road? How about the people who were driving wrecklessly?

What many young people don't understand or don't know is that there is a direct correlation between age and frequency of loss. In addition to this, many youth drivers are hard on vehicles. Basically, the rental company is collecting additional funds to pay for the additional exposure.

This person was under the age of 25 at the time of rental, therfore when he made the reservation, chances are he was asked if he was 25 with a major credit card in his name. If he answered yes to these questions, the first obviously wasn't true. If you are under 25, some car rental companies won't even rent to you. Some charge an underage fee. If the underage fee is excessive then don't rent the car. Simple as that. The person who posted this complaint obviously doesn't have a clue on the car rental industry.

I have worked for the company in question and two othe major car rental companies. First of all every major retail car rental company has an underage driver fee. This is standard. Insurance companies have the same fees when you insure your own personal car. This charge is no different for a large leasee of cars, as in the rental car business. Some charges vary from company to company. This is simply a charge that was paid previous to the consumer, yet in the end is his/her responsibility. One needs to blame the insurance companies all over the nation. Good Luck Underage Consumer.
