It seems that Circuit City offers "open box" items at a discounted rate, however they neglect to tell you the discount you receive isn't worth the trouble it causes.

My husband and I purchased a 60+" Projection TV along with a SONY surround sound home theater system. The total purchase was almost $3000.

We were assured that if we purchased a $300 extended warranty that the "open-box" item would be cover just like a brand new product. When asked what "open-box" meant, we were told "the only difference is that your TV is bubble wrapped and not in an actual box".

When we turned our TV on it had a green circle aprx 4" in diameter in the dead center of the screen. We were told we could pay the difference of the "open-box" discount and a brand new TV and they would replace it.

When we talked to the store manager at the Arlington TX store he was unwavering and had not issue with us returning the entire purchase, closing our credit account and going to their competitor. The corporate offices reacted the same way.

Do yourself a favor. Don't even bother with purchasing from Circuit City take your money to Fry's or Best Buy where they care about the customers and know what "customer service" is..

"Open-box" means more than just bubble wrapped.

They filed the following rebuttal to the above Rip-Off Report: Their email: [email protected] Their name: Anonymous Ex-Circuit City Employee Their relationship to the company: Consumer Suggestion Rebuttal: "Open-box" means more than just bubble wrapped. When you purchase one of these units you are purchasing a display model. In the case of televisions, and especially in the case of big-screens, these units have been on display and turned on ALL DAY EVERY DAY for approximately 9 months to 2 years. Display units are installed when new models are released and remain there until after ALL inventory units are sold--which is typically long after the new models have been released and put on display. If this person was not made aware of the simple facts that A. Televisions wear out with long term consistent use, and B. This television was turned on for at least 12 hours per day for at least a year, then he or she is somewhat legitimate in feeling ripped off. However, NEVER NEVER NEVER buy an open box television. This is common sense; you are buying not only an old model number, but an OLD UNIT that is bound to have serious problems.
