Just got a call from this collection agency claiming to have a court judgement against me for a Discover card debt.  I haven't had a Discover card for 20+ years.  That card's balance was paid in full over 20 years ago.  But ever so often (about every 7 to 10 years, some disreputable scammer tries to get me to pay on this non-existant debt.  They call with "unknown caller" on my phone... they threaten me with court judgment and are very rude and try to intimidate me.  I talked to my lawyer about it, and he said it is a common scam to try to convince people who had very old debt that it is still an open balance, when there is no balance.  They hope you no longer have proof that it was paid or have just forgotten.  Thing is... after 6 years, the statute of limitations on debt collection is up, so even if I did owe it (and I don't... I pay my bills) they have no right to even attempt to collect from you.  Do what I do, repeated attempts I get all their info, company address, phone number, and owner's name.  Then my lawyer sends a letter demanding they stop harrassing and scamming me, and if they continue... we counter with a lawsuit of our own.  Do not let these scumbags get away with it.  Hit them where it hurts... their bank account.
