I purchased a new iMac computer on July 7, 2002. I was aware of the potential for an update of the operating system so I asked at the time and was assured "although we do not know how it will work out yet, Apple always considers new computer purchasers when we issues software updates".

When I received the computer I was quite happy as this was confirmed by a set of three "Software Coupons" provided in the box which stated "To get Mac OS updates--and other special offers from Apple Computer--you'll need the coupons below as proof that you've purchased the Mac OS software."

The story now is: If you bought your new computer before July 17, 2002 you must pay the retail price.

Thus, I cannot get a discounted update to a major operating system release for a computer I purchased less than 5 weeks ago!

This is a rip-off and Apple doesn't give a dam!! I am one of the "switchers" from the PC. I left 10 years ago because, although I loved the computer, the company did not care about its customers.

Its deja vu!!!!

First and foremost, this isn't a rip-off.

Apple Computer announced during the Worldwide Developers Conference in May, 2002 that Jaguar would be coming later in the year. Second, you no doubt knew that Apple would be making product announcements during the Macworld Expo that was held in July, in New York City. This being the case, you could have waited a week or so to be certain you made the cut. I agree that Apple should have been more liberal about its upgrade policies. On the other hand, Jaguar is a huge upgrade over the prevoius versions of Mac OS X and is more than worth its price. Peace,

I think you miss interpreted what the sales people said. As quoted: "although we do not know how it will work out yet, Apple always considers new computer purchasers when we issues software updates." And they have. That is why people that bought there computers after July 17 get the free upgrade. But for example lets say they changed it to the 1st of July then every one who bought their computers in June would be as hysterical as you are. Next as a Mac veteran, obviously you are a mac veteran with over 10 years under your belt, you should know by now that Apple includes the "Prook-of-Purchase" coupons with all of their computers and operating systems. This way you don't have to cut the cardboard UPC code out, and as a plus you get three of them. When OS 10.1 came out any one that used os 10.0 received not a download but a free update CD and booklet. I think that is more than fair and if you don't you can always go back to the windows upgrade policy. :)
