A-1 Self Storage Stole personal property from storage unit & rerented before expiration of contract the business that doesnt give a dam Harvey Louisiana .....

My daughter had rented a storage unit from this company, I was listed on her lease as an authorized person to give access to. She had move out of the area and taken the keys with her. I went on Fathers day 2003 to get a few of her smaller items out to load on truck to be taken to her. The Manager on duty, Stephanie, was very rude upon my entering the facility and informed that I would not be able to gain access to that unit due to the rent being late. I inquired why when I had written a check for the full amount covering the lease thru 6/20/03.

She finally looked it up in her computer and realized that it was paid in full and that the lock on the code should be removed. She had me sign some papers giving them the authority to have the lock on the unit cut. She also made it clear that on Fathers day it wasn't very likely that the care taker would want to come over approximately 50ft to the office. I informed her that I was taking some of the items out of the unit and that I would be back before the 29th to clear it out. My husband returned on 6/18/03 to remove our daughters refrigerator, washer, and a large rug from the unit.

He found out that our code did not work and that we had been removed from the system, also at that time he was informed that the unit was rerented on 6/16/03! When he inquired as to what had happened to the items in the unit at first he was told that they were stolen and they were not sure who had done it. Their story changed about 3 times during this first encounter with him, indicating that they were not responsible if someone had accessed the unit and taken the items due to the lock having been cut. Then they said the door was left open 1/2 way and it was spotted at approximately midnight on the 15th and they saw the items in the unit.

Then their caretaker finally admitted to removing the items out of the unit and supposedly putting them on the street on 6/15/03! I called and spoke to Stephanie approximately 10 minutes after my husbands encounter with her and had a very unpleasant discussion with her. At that time she again stated that the items had been stolen and that she had no idea who was responsible for it. I asked her if the units were on video surveliance, she said, "Yes they are," I inquired as to if she or myself could view them for the period of time from midnight to when she said her caretaker spotted the door to the unit 1/2 open and the items were still there to when she said at sometime in the morning of the next day the items were gone. she was very rude and uncooperative and told me she did not have time to do this and it was not her job.

Our disscussion continued for approximately 20 mins. (a fact that is verifiable by my cell phone records) and at no point did she say that the items were taken out by her caretaker. I asked why my unit was rerented before my lease was up and she refused to answer me. I went to the facility to confront this issue in person and it was at that time with the caretaker present and visable shaking that HE not Stephanie admitted that the unit was cleared out by him. I asked why she lied to me and she then denied saying that the items were stolen by someone not in her employment. When I asked if I could speak to her superiors she directed me to the 1-877-687-4267 national hotline. She also stated that she did not have to discuss this problem with me since my name was not on the lease.

(But she could give me access to the unit ????) When I called this # it took approximately 2 to 3 days to get a response, 6/23/03 to be exact and then another day before an operational manager, a Mr. Andrew Bush contacted me. Mr Bush stated to me what his employees told him which was a lye, and indicated that they said the items in the unit were of no value, this is a fact that can be refuted by the purchase date of both items and their depreciated value from time of purchase!! He also stated that he had never had a person return to a unit to get their belongings in the past and agreed with me that I should have been contacted prior to the items being removed since I was paid till the 29th of the month.

He did not give me any answers as to what the company intended to do about the problem but stated that the Divisional Mngr. a Mr. Rick Ford would contact me, As of Saturday 6/28/03 I have not been contacted by anyone from the company or Mr. Ford, I again called Mr. Bush to inquire if there was a number that I could reach Mr. Ford at and was told that he had spoken to Mr. Ford personally and that he had my information and would be getting back to me. As of the posting of this report I have not heard a word from anyone representing A-1 Storage, nor has my daughter. To date they owe me approximately $1300 for the merchandise, plus the rebate on the rental of the unit thru the end of the month. Not to mention the headache and time!!!!!
