White Glove Moving And Storage Bait and Switch deceptive moving company Jersey City New Jersey

We engaged White Glove Moving and Storage to pack and move our household goods into storage (we had rented our own self-store units). An estimator named Ben Brand gave us an estimate of $1985 and assured us that the goods could be both packed and moved into storage in one day. He included a cost of $785 for materials but wrote under "Special Instructions" on the form that "*Material are estimated" (sic). The materials estimate of $785 was similar to other bids we received so we expected there might be a slight variation but nothing dramatic.

On January 29, 2003, White Glove's five movers and two trucks appeared as planned. They started to wrap everything, including large pieces of furniture, with reams of paper and lots of tape. When we asked why this had to be done, they told us it was a requirement to put it in storage. About two hours into the move, the foreman named Rafi told us that 1) they needed to use $1500 more of materials than estimated and 2) that the move could not be accomplished in a single day -- they would need to pack one day and move the next.

We negotiated the price down to a total of $3200 and insisted that all work must be done in one day. In order to achieve this, we packed alongside the movers in order to ensure we would finish in a day. I personally packed 15-20 boxes. As it turned out, we were done with the packing by 3:30 pm and all of the goods were moved into storage by 5:15 pm. The movers insisted on receiving their certified checks and cash payment in full prior to unloading our goods into storage.

I am writing to let you know about the practices of White Glove Moving and Storage, which stretch the bounds of ethical behavior. They engage in "bait and switch" tactics of lowball bidding and then changing the conditions and raising prices at a point at which the customer has little choice but to go along.

I have not been ripped off, but I have been in the moving industry for 28 years. I read these reports and I see that the majority of you set yourself up for disaster. Follow these simple guidelines and your problems will decrease.

First of all, never, ever, go by a quote over the phone or on the internet. Moving is expensive and you should go to your phone book and look up and call at least three major reputable van lines that have nationwide name recognition.

Then have these people come out and perform a visual survey.

These are performed at no charge. Sit down with each one of them and ask questions about your move. It's important. Ask them about additional charges at origin and destination. Ask about additional valuation costs.

There are three ways to move with a moving company. Actual weight and charges, binding guaranteed, and guaranteed not to exceed. The guaranteed moves do have clauses that let the carrier back out on the guaranteed price. Have each estimator give you a copy of the cube sheet to make sure everything you are momving is listed.
Never move by cubit foot charges or piece count, always move by weight.

you have the right to be present at both weigh-ins and can protest it and get a reweigh. If you get at least three estimates and they are relatively close to each other, then choose the one that impressed you the most or you trust the most, even if the price is higher than you think it should be. Once you choose one, then you can try to negoiate the price.

All major carriers use a tariff filed with DOT and ICC. These tariffs are called maximum tariffs. All major carriers discount heavily from these tariffs. I'm not saying you will have a perfect move, but I feel you will have a fair and honest move the vast majority of the time. Remember, people make mistakes.

The rule to remember is that the lowball price has to come with consessions. I get household inventory lists compiled by the customers faxed to me all the time; I then call and try to set up a visual survey; if they refusr and still want to book with me, then I tell them that without a visual survey, the shipment has to go as actual weight and services.

I have seen one bedroom apartments weigh out at over 10,000 lbs and at less than 500 lbs. If price is the governing factor in you move, then why take chances? As with any sales, get everything in writing.

The governing law does state that shipments will not be unloaded without full payment being made, and these crooks are using it to their advantage.

Remember these tips also, some tariffs used today allow extra charges at orign and destination for stair carries after the first 7 steps, long carries over 75 ft, elevator charges, and shuttles when the truck cannot access the pick-up or delivery under normal operations with damage to either's property.

Even I have had customers intentionally withhold information to get get a lower price, but by not being honest yourself, it will only catch-up at delivery.

All carriers have good moves and bad moves. The determining factors are if your origin agent is good and your assingned driver is good.
Hopefully, I have helped you in your future moving decisions.

Your move is important and you should treat it as you would treat any important decision. Just because the "big guys" are higher, that may not be the case. You get what you pay for.
