Today January 3, 2012 I phoned Vivint customer service to cancel my contract.  I had an original contract with them signed Aug. 5, 2008 for 36 months.  This contract to ended Aug. 5, 2011.

On January 6, 2011 I moved and took the service with me.  They wanted a new contract but I would not contract for more than the 8 months left in the original contract so they made the contract for 8 months.  I have this in writing.

I spoke to a customer service rep. on Jan. 6, 2011 to ensure I would not have issues cancelling after the Aug. 5, 2011 dealine and she said no problem you can cancel at anytime it is month to month after just let us know when you want to cancel by calling for further instructions.

Today when I tried to cancel they state since I did not cancel in writing 30 days prior to the end of the contract that I was automatically re-newed for a new one year contract term that would end Aug. 5, 2012.  I said I did not agree to these terms that a rep. of their company did not make this clear when they pushed the security system into my home.

They said well we can work this a few ways you can list it on craigs list and get someone to take over your contract, or pay off the $314.93 to satisfy the contract and notify us in writing 30 days in advance or you can keep the service and move it I will give you a discount for 2 months to keep it.

The part this company fails to see is I did not contract for another year I did not and do not want their service and this is an underhanded business practice.

I had no choice but to pay to get out of a contract that I did not sign up for as they said they  would make bad reports to my credit, so the lady in billing said I can give you a 10% discount if you pay in full now.  wow 10% to pay for something I did not get and will get nothing for.  Then she further stated but it will not end until 30 days after written notice if we do not get the written notice it will contract again.  WHat a viscious cycle of consumer fleecing.  I paid $283.44 and I am in hopes that my post here will keep someone else from being taking advantage of by a dirty underhanded company.

We too signed a contract back in 2009 w/Apx- we were easy prey for a door-to-door salesperson who caught us at a time when we were concerned about our young child who had recently begun opening locked doors and going outside without warning.  We signed a 3 YEAR CONTRACT!!!! paying $50/month for an installed service that essentially protected 3 doors leading out of the house, but not one alarm on a downstairs window.  We have learned our lesson to NEVER accept any deal from a door to door salesperson, specifically without checking other companies prices before hand and what service they provide.  Our neighbors- also with small children- did the same deal and were equally dissatisfied.  Less than a year into the contract, we were constantly getting false alarms due to our back door being "jiggled" by the wind.  We were constantly having to come home and meet the police due to the false alarms.  We stopped using the system altogether in 2010, yet were still paying the $50/month price.  When they company changed to "Vivent", our neighbors simply stopped payment due to the fact that they never signed a contract with that company- only APX.  When our credit card was switched to a different carrier 2 YEARS into the 3 year contract- we did not provide updated billing info under the same premise.  Wishful thinking I'm sure- today after talking with a "CUSTOMER SERVICE" (not appropriate title btw), we are going to pay $500 just to get out of the contract (with NO DISCOUNT WHATSOEVER) being offered- for a service we haven't used in over a year and to a company with a name we didn't sign a contract with- just to avoid a blemish on our credit history.  The service offered to update our account for $200, and get back to paying a monthly $50 for the service that we consider UNUSEABLE- but we would prefer to pay the EXTORTION FEE of $500 to no longer deal with this company.  To break evern, it will instead be my goal to ATLEAST cost this company $500+ in prospective business & clients by making sure to tell everyone I can about what an unreputable, poor customer service based, and poor product this company provides.
