Ugly Duckling saw me coming from a mile away. I was a first time car buyer and very enthusiastic, maybe too much! I needed a pick-up for work and was assured that the Ford Ranger I picked out was exactly what I needed. I was informed that if I reported anything wrong with the vehicle within 3 days (implied warranty) that they would have no problem in doing so. Ripoffreport Report Image I took my truck in to get fixed and was told that the repair facility was very busy, so they would only be able to fix the transmission and the rest of the problems would be fixed at a later date. I left my truck and was promised it back in 5 days. After five days, with no word from Ugly Duckling, I called them. I was lied to about my truck status and I got pretty upset. Later that day, the G.M. called me and proceeded to call me awful names as well as tell me that "I can keep your truck 5, 10 even 30 days if I want to and there is nothing you can do about it. Ugly Duckling refused to fix my truck and because of this the defective ABS system did not work, causing it too skid 30ft. at the rate of 35 mph and hit a 3/4 ton pickup. We could have been killed and they don't care at all. Ripoffreport Report Image I am sickened by this whole mess and intend of pursuing all legal avenues I have available to me to expose Ugly Duckling for the greedy, selfish and down-right evil corporation that they are!!!!!!!! Unfortunately Eddie, you are misinformed. I had my staff check this out to put this issue to bed once and for all.

DriveTime/Ugly Duckling is indeed publicly traded. What Brandon has said is correct on this point only. If you would care to look it up their symbols on AMEX Market are: UGY11D07 and UGY12J03.

What is unclear is the relationship with the individual store to the corporation, however, it could be that Garcia is the owner of a franchise.

This is where Brandon is wrong. The following information applies to the Ugly Duckling -DriveTime merger:
UGLY DUCKLING TO DRIVETIME CREDIT CORPORATION

Brandon,

A very simple search of Ugly Duckling and DriveTime will clearly show that they are NOT publicaly traded.

Sadly, a privatly owned company has greater latitude toward error becuse stockholders are no in place to guide.

The dozens of complaints found on this site and the BBB ARE controlable and CAN be addressed if desired.

Bottom line: This compnay does not care about any of the people voicing their horrors!

And, is it moraly ok to treat people who are down on their luck any way you want? I think it is time for american consumers to say no to this kind of treatment and contact news media and others to voice our concerns.

Roger,

Once again I go back to what I say about people only being partially educated and making uneducated posts on this site.

Drive Time (formally Ugly Duckling) is PUBLICALLY traded on the stock market. So that means that one man, Ernie Garcia in this case, can NOT own a traded company. It is true that Mr. Garcia started The Duck in Florida. It is also true that Mr. Garcia is currently trying to buy a controlling share (51%) of Drive Time to regain a controlling interest in the company, but has been unsuccessful in his negotiations with the current stock holders, myself included!

Yes, I did work for The Duck for a while, so I do know a bit about the company. I will admit that some of the cars we sold were not the greatest, but what are you expecting? I sold cars to people who just had reposessions that same morning! Who else would finance them? People who had multiple reposessions, sometimes three or four reposessions, who will finance them? No other bank I know of. I do not feel bad about the cars I sold to people, becasue for the most part people put themselves in the situation where they had bad credit and had to buy from The Duck.

So, before you go and ridicule the company, at least look at what they do for people who otherwise would have no way of financing a vehicle and at least getting started in the right direction to better credit.

I'm not ashamed to admit it, I personally bought a Duck car when I worked there. Bad credit didn't keep me from getting conventional financing, but yet it was a lack of credit. I bought a 95 Dodge Stratus, and yes, it had it's issues. But, the issues that it had were things that go wrong at 100K. I had to replace the clutch about 6 months after I got it. The brakes needed to be done a few months after that. And other small items. That's just part of buying a used car, whether it be from The Duck/Drive Time, a more reputable dealership, or a private party.

Yes, they should have better cars, and it does seem that with the changing of names to Drive Time that they are progressing towards that stage of having more quality vehicles. I have checked out their new web site and they now have a search function that lets you view the current inventory, alot of the cars they offer now are newer, sometimes within factory warranty periods, and more reliable brands such as Honda and Toyota. Hopefully, it will prove true, and hopefully some of the negative publicity that was associated with The Duck will subside and a more appealing and professional dealership will emerge.

For those of you who have had bad experiences with The Duck or Drive Time, as a FORMER employee I do apologize to you, and I urge you to continue to voice your concerns however you deem necessary.

Brandon,

The owner of Ugly Duckling (DBA Drive Time) is Ernie Garcia. The same guy tied to the Keating Lincoln Savings and Loan Collapse of the late 80s.

Also the same guy involved in the Delaware class action suit when Duckling was taken private.

Are you begining to see a pattern here?

Now get back to work selling those "sub-prime" cars for the Duck!

I'm kinda amazed that all of the sudden not only has Ugly Duckling's main office moved from Gilbert Arizona (right behind Budget Auto Sales on Country Club and Baseline) to Phoenix, but also that a company that is publicaly traded on the stock market now has a single owner. I feel for some of the people on this site becasue they talk about things they have absolutly no knowledge of!

#8UPDATE EX-employee responds

It was known in the company that they sell crapy cars to people with bad credit with high interest rate. They just changed their name to Drive Time because they are known for their bad practices. They still sell crappy cars so beware!
