The Sad lady with the Dying husband office supplies scam
I was called at my small Montessori school by a lady named "Dorothy" who told me a sad story about her husband who was dying in the hospital. He had a small office supply business that he inherited from his dad. Now she was faced with having to sell everything and move feom the Central Valley of California to her cousin in Florida. The cousin was helping her out. She had "just a few items to sell off". Would I help her out. These would be a below cost and then she read off a list of items. I got what I though was a couple hundred dollars of pens, tape and post it notes. I told her about the SBA for help. She thanked me and sent me a present. Then we recieved 4 boxes of things. Then we got a bill for $4226.00. This included shipping and handling of $387.00. We were flabbergasted. Then a fellow parent who works for a nonprofit told us she heard from the Tropical Business Products Company. They ordered about $1000 worth of items. They received a boll for $10,000. and including shipping and handling for $600.00! They heard the same story. I wroite them a letter and mailed back the products at book rate for about $70.00. Beware of scams. I never reply to phone solicitation and I sure won't again. I called them right away after getting the bill and "Dorothy's cousin called back really mad for me wanting to return the items. We are talking to our lawyer, the BBB and Channel 7 on our side to get these people exposed. Watch out!!!
