Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I attempted to return defective software to the store and was told I could only exchange the software for an exact duplicate, which they didn't have. The only way to exchange it was to drive to another Target store. The software was defective when purchased. I had my original receipt.

There is no "exchange for same item" policy posted in their software department. Even if this policy was posted it is not legal according to the Uniform Commercial Code (federal regulation).

I will never again purchase software, CDs, DVDs, or electronic goods at any Target stores. In fact, I will not make any purchases at Target if I can buy the merchandise at Wal Mart.

Lenny "Customer Service" is not addressed in the UCC

Lenny, Target as well as ANY OTHER store/retailer has the right and ability to return whatever they want. What is the question is if the "manufacture" will accept it back from them for a credit or refund. Now, I understand the copy right laws. That was not my point nor it is now. Customer Service is. This man clearly was not trying to copy or do anything wrong. He didn't even know that must stores do not accept such items for return. Why is it out of the question to accept Target to extend some "Customer Service" and refund this person? Each situation needs to be considered one on one. Customer Service should be expected and extended to each and every customer who makes a purchase at not only Target but any other store. There are just SO MANY stories of exteremly poor "Customer Service" from Target stores. Why is that? Is it the public? Are we all unreasonable? No. It's Target. There Customer Service guidelines needs a COMPLETE change. You can read on line Targets financial report- they make HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS. Why does a customer have to post a story on "Rip off Report" and fight through the corporate "Guest Relations" to be refunded less then $10.00? Why not impower the "guest relations" staff to extend this customer service? Why make the customer FIGHT for what is only fair? How many people don't fight and just go away? It's about "Customer Service" and we the public have the right to EXPECT it, not only from Target but any store we shop in!

Target is issuing a refund for defective software

I wrote the original complaint and want to let you know Target has agreed to offer me a refund of my purchase price. I addressed a complaint letter to Target corporate Office for Consumer Satisfaction, with copies sent to the President and Vice President. Amy, a senior customer service rep, contacted me with a satisfactory solution, a Target card to be used on the purchase of my choice. I believe a follow up to my original complaint is in order. Thank you.

What about "Customer Service"? Fairness?

#11Consumer Comment

I write this to the posters who felt the orginal person who posted the complaint was "wrong' in some way for expecting some "customer service" from Target. Well, first I agree it's wrong to expect customer service from Target. They extend NONE. However, lets look at the situation: I understand a policy that states "same item exchange only" for CDs, DVD's etc. However, if the store does not have the "same item" then why not give a store credit or refund? It's called CUSTOMER SERVICE! The poster clearly didn't know that "same item exchange" was "normal" so what's the chance they are attempting to do something wrong? Not very likely in my opinion. Clearly they are just a fair and honest person who bought a defective item. That happens. So, have a policy in place for people like them, fair honest shoppers! Again, it's called CUSTOMER SERVICE. There are MANY ways this could be done. What about having the same item set to the customer from the closes store within 24 hours? What about a credit good for the customer to go on line and order the item themselves? What about giving the managers the ability to handle the situation on a individual basis and allow them to evaluate the situation and make a CUSTOMER SERVICE decision? I could go on and on with CUSTOMER SERVICE friendly ways to handle the situation. Target's PROFITS ARE in the HUNDRED MILLIONS every YEAR! They can afford to extend the customers who shop in thier stores and allow them to make such outragous PROFITS some CUSTOMER SERVICE! Sorry, to the three people who responded but the orginial poster is justified in thier anger!

I would love to be there when you attempt this at other stores. It's not a Target policy so much as a nationwide thing. Every store you go to follows this exact policy, so by all means, buy some random crap movie from Wal-Mart, open it, and then attempt to return it without exchanging it for the exact same thing. As far as I know, they won't do it either. And if they do, they could get in BIG trouble.

What part of the UCC is it violating? And the policy is posted on the back of the receipt and at the front desk...

Like the other responder said, if you could return it for a full refund, what would stop people from basically just installing it, and then returning it? If you don't want to go to another Target, contact the software manufacturer.

Everyone knows that you can only do exact exchanges on software. Otherwise, what would prevent someone from buying a program, installing it on their computer, and returning the disc for cash, or another program? The same goes for every form of media. Are you new to society? And if you are outraged by THIS practice, you're in for a very rude awakening once you switch to Wal-Mart. (shudders).
