As power of attorney for my elderly (81 year old) mother I asked Mom why 190 gallons of home heating oil cost her $622. It seemed extremely high as I watch oil and gas prices closely for finance purposes. Mom said she was charged $3.219 plus an additional $9 for a hazmat fee for the 190 gallons.

I researched the internet and found pennsylvania Home heating oil prices were currently at $2.49 per gallon. Then I called a local competitor who distributes home heating oil and actually has their worksite depot within 100 yards of Superior Plus depot that had delivered my Mom's heating oil at the higher price. The competitor said their price was at $2.469 per gallon and there was no extra hazmat fee or delivery fee for their delivery. The competitors pricing would have cost my elderly mother $471.00 and saved her $150.00.

I was not happy so I called Superior Plus in Montoursville and spoke with the Customer Service Rep (Tim). He said he could do a better price of about 20 cents a gallon  but that would be about the best he could do. That still leaves an exorbant 55 cents a gallon more than the competitors price I was quoted. Tim said that because they have 20 trucks and other expenses the little guy doesn't have and that they have more overhead and their service is more reliable so they can and do charge more. (ie..If you want better you pay more) He said my elderly mother was already getting the senior discount (3 cents off a gallon and the price was still $3.219 per gallon) What a discount, I thought... So Tim indicated he would put Mom's account on Wilco, and I said What is Wilco? He said it is a "Will Call" if we decide later we want them to make a delivery instead of AUTO delivery. I said NO. I said CLOSE the account and I will find another distributor for my Mom's Home Heating oil.

We already overpaid and that money is gone because my mother is prompt about sending payment for her billings the day after she receives the billing. End result was that I contacted the competitor and put my mom in their register as a new account and we will no longer do business with Superior Plus Energy Services.

I feel my elderly mother was and many other senior residents are being overcharged by Superior Plus Energy for home heating oil. The Customer Service Rep was extremely nice in our conversation and I understand he is doing his job at his best so no fault on him but Superior Plus needs to be made aware that more will be done on my part to educate and protect seniors and other lower income people about their gouging. That $622 heating oil bill took a large chunk of my Mom's $1100.00 Monthly Social Security check. I have already contacted the local newspaper to have an article on the subject.
