We rented a vehicle from Budget Rent a Car at the airport in Kalispell, Montana. After returning home, we received a call that the vehicle had been damaged. The claim was that the roof rack had been partially torn off, and that there were numerous paint scratches surrounding it. We did not damage this car. It was never parked under anything, or driven through anything. The force requred to tear a factory roof rack off would not go unnoticed if one were drivng the vehicle.

Because we did not photograph the roof at the time of return, we cooperated with PurCo, the claims handler for Budget. We had insurance through our credit card. The agent, Daniel Petersen, was uncooperative when asked to provide additional documentation. After severl months, the claim was paid by visa.

We requested but did not receive a copy of the bill submitted, and a copy of the amount paid. We made mulitple requests which were ignored. We then received a notice from a new agent, Michelle Hansen, on July 7, that we still owed $605. I requested again payment documentation, in addition to copies of a signed rental agreement, photos of the vehicle, and the name and contact number for the individual that found the damage. This individual claimed, while the car was at the car wash, to have noted this damage. It is our suspicion that Budget damaged their own car at the car wash and then claimed against our insurance to repair it.

My requests were again ignored. On Aug 20, I received a new demand from Michelle Hansen, for an unpaid balance of now, $1037. No reference to my previous communications,, and no explanation of why the bill had now increased by $400. She also threatened to pursue legal action against us, and file a bad credit report, stating that we had 10 days to comply. The level of unprofessional behavior here is extraordinary, as well as being corrupt and fraudulent.

I responded asking again for all the documentation. I have now contacted Budget, and the Insurance commisioner for the state.
