2004 Nissan Altima - pretty good car until it started blowing white smoke ie. burning lots of oil at only 40,000 miles!!!

I noticed the billowing white smoke within days of the warranty expiration - I did not note the date at the time which was a mistake. I am still not certain whether it occurred just prior to or after the warranty expiration date. I did not take to a Nissan dealership but rather chose my mechanic of 25 plus years who is one of the best in the county.

He is convinced that the problem falls within the recall Nissan had in 2004. My Altima falls within the range of VIN numbers that could potentially have screws fall into the intake manifold thereby causing damage to the piston and rings therefore white smoke from burning oil.

For unknown and yet to be explained reasons, Nissan can not tell me why my Altima was not part of the recall. My mechanic used a device called a boroscope that can look into the piston. He saw metallic scrape marks which in his view could only be from the falling screws.

I paid to have the engine opened and Nissan's engineer took dozens of photos of which they told me they could only send me 6 which I am still waiting for. Since I need a car for work I shelled out $3800 for a re-built engine for a car that has 40,000 miles! Nissan since sent me a dear john letter, so sorry not going to offer financial assistance since out of warranty. They did not want to put in writing all the fabrications they told me over the phone - that their engineer saw no scrapings and that causation was due to improper maintenance.

I spoke to two lawyers but one was only interested in class actions and felt the potential class to be too small and the other thought I'd have a tough time going up against Nissan so I created a website and a twitter site to get attention and maybe Nissan will reconsider and do the right thing.
