In December 2006 we purchased a 73" Mitsubishi DLP 1080p television for about $5000.00 and have discovered that we are victims of a widespread fraud at the hands of Mitsubishi Digital Electronics of America.

The purchase was made at Magnavox/Best Buy in Murrieta, CA. The television was advertised as a 1080p resolution television, which at the time was cutting edge and demanded a premium price. We have many problems that seem to have been shared by other consumers. Our first problem appeared when we found out that the television only displays in 1080i. We purchased nearly $400 in cables to accomodate 1080p resolution. The television came out of the box with a 1080p sticker at the bottom of the screen. It has a demo mode that boasts the 1080p light engine, but does not display in 1080p resolution for HD DirecTV or the Sony Playstation 3. Neither HDMI port allows for 1080p resolution.

Complaints made to Mitsubishi and Best Buy were unhearalded and the return policy timeframes had run out by the time the 1080p problem was discovered. The technology capable of providing 1080p resolution picture came out too late for us to discover that we were misled. There was no evidence that this oversight was so widespread at the time.

Shortly after discovering the misrepresentation on the resolution, in October of 2007 the TV stopped turning on. A visit to Mitsubishi's warranty website indicated that the lamp had quit working. The website informed us that we were out of warranty and had to purchase a replacement lamp for about $250.00. Not wanting to squabble, we ordered the replacement lamp and went about replacing the burnt out one. Strangely, the manual mentioned in detail how to replace the lamps; a point I found convenient, but then it dawned on me that it was damning evidence. It is evidence that Mitsubishi had purposely released a product with an overwhelming shortfall, turned consumable replacement, which they had failed to disclose at point of sale.

Shortly after replacing the lamp, in January 2008 the light engine failed. The DLP light engine failure caused discoloration in the TV picture, which was intermittent at first and became permanent later. We contacted Mitsubishi Warranty who again cited the expired warranty and said to schedule an appointment with one of their approved vendors. After a short eternity the vendor, who was knowledgeable and honest but charged an appointment fee, looked at the TV for two seconds and diagnosed the light engine failure. After another short eternity I received an estimate for over $2800.00.

Initially Mitsubishi refused to help citing the lapsed warranty. After complaints to the BBB they relented and replaced the part free of charge. The Mitsubishi DLP television engines are made up of prisms/mirrors that are glued together and sit near a lamp that gets so hot that they are bound to either burn up the lamp or burn up the light engine.

In January 2009 the lamp burnt out again. We were under the impression that the lamp had a one year warranty. Mitsubishi said that they were only under warranty for three months. I demanded a free replacement lamp and after going through 3 levels of management have at best been offered only a discounted lamp at $190.00. There are other replacement lamps available online for less than $100.

After searching the internet for alternatives I have discovered many discount part suppliers taking advantage of the obvious defects in this model as well as websites featuring the thousands of other disgruntled buyers of Mitsubishi DLP models. Some of these complaints feature other problems, such as ballast boards, total rebuilds, poorly assembled thermistor sensors, air flow problems, useless repairmen, etc.. The other models indicated include WD-73727, WD-52327, WD-62628, WD-57831, and more. None of these complaints were posted to ripoffreports.com and we felt we needed to alert the public.

We are filing complaints with the FTC, our local district attorney, and the Better Business Bureau. We are also searching for an attorney. I would rather spend $50,000 with the goal of causing Mitsubishi to announce a massive recall than to shell over another $5 to these folks. I am certain that if repaired our Mitsubishi TV will not last another year. It is overwhelmingly apparent that these flaws were known by Mitsubishi prior to releasing the products on the market and that the ploy is to do as little as possible to save/make a buck off the trusting American public.
