My roommate and I contacted Move for Less after finding a few companies on Google; the owner, Rey De Silva, called back and quoted $75 per hour for 3 men plus a flat fee of $37 for gas. He said anything over 3 hours would be charged at a half hour rate of $37.50 and sent this quote by e-mail including the date of the move. When asked why the company didn't charge a deposit, Rey De Silva said that it is hard to find business and they don't charge deposits so that people will choose their company. Good enough. The day before the move, we called the company to confirm and were asked if the move was on the 31st or the 30th. After sorting this out, Rey said that the new total was going to be $400. Why, when we were quoted $262? Because we had "changed the date" according to him and he could "not honor the quote". The manager claims to have sent follow up emails (nothing received) which adjusted the quote - doesn't really make sense since he didn't know about the supposed date change until the day we spoke, no? Don't use this company; you're in for a lot of broken expectations and having to reserve a last minute UHAUL and do everything yourself. I intend to post this negative review everywhere I find. You have been warned.

Let's be really clear about this: There is absolutely no company that would charge $75 per hour for 3 men. The going rate in most parts of the country with any legit company, including and especially on the East Coast is $125 per hour for a 3 person crew with a 4 hour minimum and double that rate for drive time of maybe one hour. In other words, if you were quoted less than maybe $750 for your local move - then you got off pretty cheap. But then, you went on Google to find this company - there are a lot of bottom-feeders on the internet. Made me wonder if they were even licensed, but I digress...
If you rented a U-Haul and did everything yourself, then you still would have economically incurred a cost that was more than $262 when you consider fuel, time, and other important factors. I'm often surprised when people come here, get a really cheap quote, and even on the chance they question why the price is so cheap (because a lot of people don't ask), that they actually believe the answer given. You didn't really and critically think through what was said by the owner...you just accepted the cheap price and no deposit.
I mean if you actually and critically think about it.... then there's no way you should have accepted the answer the owner gave for the low rate. Based on the quote, you're paying each person $25 per hour to do fairly hard work you wouldn't do, for which they get maybe 50% of that. That leaves the owner earning maybe $40 per hour on the labor, before expenses. A $37 flat fee for transportation doesn't cover the truck's gasoline and amortization; you must have learned some of that from renting the truck. At $262, the owner is actually losing money on the move, when you consider all of the business expenses, which exceed $40 per hour. Even at $400....the owner made a little money...perhaps enough to feed his family.
Should the company just been upfront and given you a quote for $400? Absolutely they should have and you rightly criticized them for it. However, you should have simply let them do the move for the $400 rather than go through the hassle of a U-Haul. The guys I feel bad for are the 3 guys who could have earned money by doing your move.
