On June 23rd, I went to this Hyundai service department to have a new battery installed in my son's 2001 Tiburon. They changed the battery and that was that, no report of anything else amiss like a bad cable or alternator, nothing.

Then about one week later, when he went to start the car, it would not start. We brought it back to the service department and Fred Busillo told us the battery was fine, but the cable was corroded so severely that that was the problem. He wanted $104 labor and $59 for the part, which seemed unreasonable, so we shopped around and found that Sears would do it for much, much less.

So we took the car to Sears, they said the cable was not corroded, they just needed to snip off the ends and put new connectors, which cost only $5!!! Here is what the Sears mechanic told us:

1. The job Hyundai's service department did was shoddy. They didn't clean up the acid off the connectors, and they left the positive cable connector so loose that it could be lifted off easily.

2. They should have checked the alternator before even installing the battery and Fred said they did not check the alternator.

3. The Hyundai battery when hooked up to the alternator jumped around from 1200 to 1500 to 1300 to 1400 to 1200, showing it was a faulty battery. The Diehard was steady at 1400. He said that this was most likely an old battery that had been sitting around for a long time.

We spoke with Rob Patterson, service manager, and told him that we would be returning their battery. He said he would not give us any money back - none!

All we were asking for was to refund the price of the battery - it was less than 30 days old and faulty - not the service amount, but he adamantly refused after we made three phone calls to him, saying he would only replace it with a new one. He even hung up on us once. We told him we just wanted cash back, not another Hyundai battery. We even warned him that we would make a report to the BBB and Ripoff Report online, and he said "That's fine, go ahead"

He still refused, so instead of letting them get away with pawning off their old battery on us for $126, and trying to rip us off for another $159, we were forced to pick up a new battery that we didn't need or want! We are donating it to our son's fiance's dad who is a mechanic because he says a lot of people he does work for cannot afford a new battery, and now he will be able to provide it to them.

Not only will we never go to another Hyundai dealer for service, but we will never buy another Hyundai. We even wrote an e-mail to the general manager of this Hyundai dealership, William Bell, warning him that we would be making a complaint online and he never even bothered to get back to us.
