Think you have a block on those 900 #'s?
Did you know that in many regions of the United States a person cannot protect themselves from someone using their telephone number to make 1-900 calls to adult entertainment services, psychic hotlines, etc? I found this out after receiving the monthly phone bill for a whopping $816.00 for one month's service. Over $783 of this was for 25 calls made over a period of 12 days. When I called my long distance provider (GTE) and tried to find out where these calls were placed to (as I did not make them!) the phone company not only gave me incorrect numbers to call to inquire, but the numbers that I finally got through to for service couldn't help. One Supervisor suggested that I get a block on my phone. There is a one time fee of $12 for this block and then a monthly fee of $6. BUT.. this block doesn't work on blocking 800 numbers. So, you ask what this has to do with 900 #s. Well the phone company sales and marketing people have come up with a clever way of getting around the block on those 900 #s that the phone company sells to its customers. They sell an 800 # service to these adult entertainment companies. Then when an unsuspecting or ruthless individual dials the 800 # advertised, they are instructed that their call will be charged to a 900 # by putting in the requested information. What this information is I couldn't tell you because when I asked the customer service people at GTE Long Distance, they couldn't tell me how, what 800 number was dialed, what the name of the company is that has this 800 #, or any other useful information that I might be able to use to track down the adult entertainment business that was called. In my opinoin this is a rape of all unsuspecting telephone consumers in the United States. You'll notice in their address that they are located at a place named Hidden Ridge. With all of the incompetencies and inabilities to be of assistance, as well as the pure deception involved, it's no wonder they want to stay hidden!
