A prerequisite of the INS was to have a medical examination done by one of their pre-approved physicians. I went to such a physician and was charged $214 for Tetanus and MMR shots. I was surprised when they presented the bill to me after the visit. Initially i was told it would cost me $40 for the visit. Then while I was on the examination table, the doctor told me that I needed some shots with no mention of the cost or the indications.

I am also a physician and was wandering how come in my native country we give these type of shots for free and yet they charge $214 here in the United States. It wasn't until now that I have joined the workforce of the medical profession here that I realized that what this doctor did to me was unethical professionally and morally. She takes advantage of new immigrants.

This doctor should be dropped from the INS list.

The doctor that I am referring to is Glorietta Z. Ang-Fonte, M.D.

I am a medical student and started reading this forum for amusement. This physician did not lie about the cost of the medical visit- $40 was charged for seeing the doctor. Any additional tests or procedures would naturally add to the bill. It is absurd to expect free vaccinations when the clinic or office that provided them to you must purchase them from a supplier. Just because you were ignorant of normal business practices does not make this physician unethical. If finances are an issue, patients should always ask what proposed treatments cost. Physicians have enough to worry about is helping chose the best treatment for you and should not be expected to automatically counsel every patient on how to pay for it. This doctor did the best she could to improve your health and well-being, you should thank her, pay the bill, and remember to ask about costs the next time you go to the doctor.
