Frank Caputo - Vidal Salcedo - Toyota Of Manhattan Incompetent and Rude, find someone else to buy your Toyota vehicle from. New York City New York
I decided to take advantage of the strength of the Canadian dollar and cross border shop for a new car. I phoned several agencies and decided on this one as I felt it would be most convenient for me.
After discussing the transaction for months with Vidal Salcedo and by email, giving a bank draft deposit, I arrived to pick up my new car to drive home.
I had spoken also with Vidal's manager, Frank, and confirmed all the details with him. I made it an easy sale for them--I did not try to negotiate even. So anyway they had my money.
I looked over the documents for ownership and realized that the dealership had not filled them out properly or filed them properly with the proper authorities--you'd think this is what they do, they would do it properly.
Vidal is pleasant but so dumb that he had to be explained repeatedly what is wrong, and that if the title document is not correct, I can not legally own the car. Finally some of the other salespeople could see what I was saying, and tried to explain to him, and he still didn't understand (!!)
Frank is really horrible--I feel so sorry for anyone who has to interact with him. Frank is really someone that I feel I have to warn people about. I never written a complaint about anyone before, but he is rude and once he has your money, he didn't care if or when I would get the car. He never apologized for their mistake that was so silly and lacking in basic sense.
He really is the sterotype of a car dealer, at least he understood the problem right away though, unlike his protege.
It took 5 months of getting to file the proper documents, and they would never give me a straight answer about why the Department of Motor Vehicles kept requesting the same information from them all the time, or what was going on. During that time I was sometimes told, oh it will be a month by Frank, then another month, then another month -- you get the idea. During this time I had to drive rentals--which became very costly.
Finally after a few months of this behavior, I explained I was considering legal action for their refusal to give me a straight answer, or buy back the car. He was always rude and dodging me, and this just made him even more of the same.
Finally I had brought my license plates to the dealership for them to attach to the car when I first came to pick up the car. After I returned to finally drive the car back, they had taken my plates off the car and put New York state plates on. They lost my plates. Luckily the car drives well.

There is fortunately two sides to every story and sometimes consumers are right and there are occasions where consumers do not give the full story. This particular consumer purchased the vehicle from Toyota of Manhattan with the knowing intentention of driving over the border into Canada and did not inform the dealer of her intentions at all.When the vehicle was paid in full the consumer was supplied all pertinent documentation to register her car out of the state of NY. Because of the restrictions of purchasing new vehicles in the US and taking them into Canada she was turned away at the border and returned to the selling dealer for an explanation. After investigating the situation I Frank Caputo became aware of the laws governing purchases in the US and exlained this to the consumer which she seemed to be well aware of. She subsequently brought in one of her freinds in NYC and had the dealer register insure and title the vehicle in the persons name and had to wait for the title for seven weeks before she could transfer ownership back to herself and take the vehicle over the border as a preowned car. This unfortunately was not the dealers or the Frank Caputo fault but a consumer who was trying to avoid paying tariffs in her country of residence and fradulantly using an unsuspecting Manager and sales consultant as her scapegoat. She then proceeded to make statement of dissatisfaction on the internet for potential consumers to read. It's unfortunate after 20 plus years of an impeccable reputation that I Frank Caputo have a consumer who tried to fraud her goverment make a complaint for millions of people to read on the internet, I thank Ripoff Report for this opportunity for a rebuttal as it is important to some of us to maintain a good image in the retail auto sales field.
