First Union is so messed up that I don't really remember how all these fees were incurred it's been so long ago but it seems it was like this. I had say 100 in the bank that they were showing I had made a deposit which did not post until the next day for 100 more dollars I had written several small checks and a couple of larger ones most of them came in on the same day instead of running all the little checks through and bouncing the big check They cashed the biggest check bounced the next largest one next, to get all the money out of the account in fees, and sent back say 4 checks for 10 to 20 dollars a piece, at 29 dollars a check that is 126 dollars, my deposit comes in for 100 so i'm 26 dollars in the red, the other two checks come in and are returned another 58 dollars, no way i'm paying this not and having to pay to pick up all these checks too, my two hundred dollars except for the one check for 60 or 70 dollars is gone in fees.

even if they had payed all of these checks and then charged me fees that would have been an obscene amount to pay. Then all the checks are run back through the bank again six checks at 29 that is another 154 so lets see i'm 240 in the hole just in returned check charges not to mention the 130 i did pay them, that is 370 they charged me in fees for two hundred dollars worth of checks that the money was in the bank for and all this happens before i even get a notice that I have a returned check, then i get a notice I owe them like 175 or something then a final notice of like 240 is that insane or is it just me? I think first union is crazy.

it might not have cleared there machines but it was there even if they had payed all the little checks and sent the big ones back I probably wouldn't have minded to pay 29 or even 58 in returned check charges which is crazy but i messed up I would have definatly paid that but no way am I paying what they want me too. If they had run the checks through properly with common sense

but no they chose the costly way now I no longer bank with them it would be hard for me to get a checking account with anyone if I didn't already have another one. This account was only an alternate account for me it wasn't even a primary account. They just used their overdraft fee to make a killing off of me and adversly affect me for the rest of my life.

As this is reported on my credit file and they can actually verify that I owe this debt. Amazing that the order a bunch of checks go through the bank could have that much effect on a persons life They have since merged with wachovia I hope that they don't bring this sense of customer service to thier partnership.

Maybe we need to look out for Wachovia

It doesn't sound like you were treated very well. The banks behavior is typical of banks that go "Global-online", or "National". It seems like they lose any concern for their customers, and profitmaking is the one and only priority. Local banks still have some humanity left. They need their customer base, so they will give out perks, breaks, and treat you better overall. If and when you look for a new bank, ask them are your National, Statewide or Local-Regional? Get a listing of all their branches. If they're local, State or Regional, stay with them. The odds are they will treat you better, and help you learn about banking and building good credit. The only time they change certain fees or rules is to stay out of the red or because it is a State or Federal requirement. Of coarse, someone might have a story about a local, or Statewide bank that stinks, but the National and Global are worse. Whatever inconvenience the local might have is nothing compared to the nightmares through nationals. Thank you for the warning. I might look into Wachovia to find out more about customer misstreatment later. Rip-off Report Volunteer

I banked with Wachovia for a number of years til I got smart about what they were doing and I left and went to First Federal Bank. No problems there at all. First Federal gives you immediate credit on all your deposits as you may them. Then they go through what's outstanding and deduct from the accound. Wachovia does not do that. They told me when I went into the office to talk to them that they hold all deposits while the do all the deductions first. Then they do the deductions and then yyour deposits are put in. That's when you get hit with the NSF fees and everything esle. They told me they did it that way for a pourpose. To benefit them and they can make more money off us. No amount of arguing or pleading with them will help. They says it's our fault.

Carefully review your "Terms of Agreement"

It may seem like a headache to read your "Terms of Aggreement", but there may be helpful information in that agreement to help you. Unfortunatly, it might also state "they reserve the right to withdraw and deposit any amount, whenever they choose" (not in those exact words). Whatever merge with www.wachovia.com occurs this will not be applicable for you, as an account holder prior to the merge. The math on this one is unclear to me. It sounds like you deposited money to cover checks written, but the deposit transaction was not acknowledged soon enough by the bank. This can happen and is not unusual. For example, at my bank, if I deposit any given amount after 1:00pm, this deposit will not appear, until the next day. If I am in a pinch, I would have to make an early morning deposit to cover all incoming checks. They have to tell you how their depositing system works. At my bank, they have signs everywhere. They also mailed the info to us in writing. One way or another, they have to tell you, or you cannot be held accountable for the oversight. You can rebuild your credit, and dispute the overdraft fees, but it wont be easy. Hope it works out. Rip-off Report Volunteer
