RIP OFF WARRANTY on Dell batteries. BATTERIES ARE $299.00 PLUS SHIPPING!!!

I contacted Dell for a warranty on my battery. I bought the computer on 8/6/2007. Today is June 29, 2008. So I have a 1 year warranty right? And I am under warranty. WRONG WRONG WRONG.

They are counting the warranty NOT from the date that I bought it. They are counting the warranty from the day they shipped it to SAMS CLUB.

The computer shipped to SAMS in JUNE of 2007. I bought it on 8-6-2007. A DELL SUPERVISOR told me that the warranty begins to tick away from the minute SAMS CLUB got it and NOT when I opened it and started to USE IT.

SO....I asked him, "If the computer hits SAMS CLUB shelves on Jan 1, 2008 and I buy it 364 days later on December 31, 2008, I get a ONE DAY WARRANTY?

HE TYPED IN YES!!!

Sam's Club is like any normal business who buys computers

I work for one of the sub-contractors that Dell hires to repair Dell laptops and desktops. From my understanding, Dell does not have "Authorized resellers". The companies that sell Dell computers in retail stores buy there computers from Dell as if they where a normal business using the computers. Think of it this way: You purchase 10 laptops from dell with 2 year warranties with the intent to resell them at a higher price to other people, Should the warranty start on the day you purchase the laptops or the date you RESELL them to someone else? As such, the warranty starts from when Sam's club buys the computers not from when you purchase them from Sam's club. Your beef is with Sam's club for mis-representing the warranty status and not Dell. When ever I get calls for customers who buy from retail stores, the company information that appears on my ticket is the company who sold the machine to the customer and not the customer.

I'm not really sure why Dell is listed as the "ripoff-er" in this matter. Sam's Club, would have been the party responsible with providing you all of the details of the computer...including ALL warranty information. This, to me, seems like a pretty important detail they failed to mention when you bought it (they didn't even give you any paperwork outlining how the warranty would work?). The reason that my title says typical? As an employee at Dell, seeing the huge amounts of customer service complaints on internet blogs, hate sites, etc, can be frustrating...especially when it's something the company really has no control over. Is Dell violating their own warranty policy? No way. Should they still "do the right thing" to make the customer happy? You betcha. Sadly, this, in most cases, is a thing of the past. To argue with Dell on this matter would, frankly, be a waste of your time (I don't want that to happen). Contact Sam's Club and don't back down! The issue here, is failure on their part to fully inform you about what you were buying from their store. Hope this helps :)

What to do

#6Consumer Suggestion

First, find the warranty that came with your computer. I have never heard of a warranty that starts running when the unit is shipped to an authorized retailer. I would not let this matter end with the statements of a minimum wage flunky on a live chat help line. Second, to preserve your warranty claim I would send letters to the corporate offices of both Dell and Sam's Club. Send these by certified mail with return receipt cards. Demand replacement batteries from both of them. Last, if you cannot wait for the wheels to turn to get the new batteries, see if you can find batteries at Radio Shack or Batteries Plus. Unless Dell has developed some sort of proprietary battery, both of those outlets usually have batteries at a far lower price than what computer manufacturers want.
