94 year old mom wanted me to look over several sets of papers that she had been saving for my semi-annual visit.  I discovered two sets of collateral for a "Peace of Mind" policy on her vehicle.  She had purchased one in January, and another in July this year.

I contacted Crossroad Auto Group and told them that I wanted to cancel the policy and get a refund.  Their initial response was to try a high pressure sales pitch including extending the term of the policy.  I told them that I didn't want to extend, as I already had a policy (the first one) in effect.  I faxed them my POA as well as a note to cancel the policy on 8/21 which was inside of the 60 day cancellation policy that was described in the collateral.

The representative then demanded that I send them a letter, which I did - signed by Mom requesting cancellation and refund of the amount specified in the collateral - 95% of the premium which mom had paid in full.

I returned home, but Mom says she hadn't received anything from Crossroad Auto Group or Liberty STF, Inc.

I decided to call Liberty STF, Inc. and gave them the policy number which the representative told me was cancelled as of 8/26.  This date is also within the 60 day time frame for cancellation before they move to a prorated refund.  The representative offered to connect me to the "Refund Department".

The "Refund Department" looped back to Crossroad Auto Group.  Surprise! Surprise!  I left a message on their answer box, but no return calls.

This really ticked me off, so I sent a fax to both companies giving them until 10/19 for receipt of the refund due otherwise I would start with criminal fraud complaints.

So as I wait out this deadline, I wonder about the first policy that has basically the same collateral.  It is sold by  AutoAssure, LLC of Plano, Texas, and Adminiatered by Interstate National Dealer Services of Florida, Inc out of Atlanta Georgia.

Anybody know anything I should know about these folks?

Final Resolution!

In the prior episode, I had resolved to contact the Plantation, FL police.  After a week, I sent a second email just to make sure I hadn’t fallen into a crack.  Soon after the second email, I got a response email from a sergeant in the Investigation Division asking for additional information.  Apparently, the attachments to my original email had fallen off.  I was able to talk with the sergeant, send him the attachments and make sure he understood exactly the issue and how I arrived on his desk.

The sergeant  advised me that he would review the documentation and  let me know if he found evidence of criminality or something that I might need to take care of as a civil manner.  I was just happy to hear from someone who could tell the difference, and maybe point me in the right direction.

True to his word, he reviewed the documentation and said that the “INTENT” factor seemed to be missing so my issue didn’t really amount to outright fraud.  Since I was clear across the country, it would seem that the remaining option would be to engage a lawyer and bring suit against the company.  That option didn’t sound very attractive to me, but I guess it was the tone of my voice or to complete his investigation, he told me that he would plan on paying a visit to the company the following day and let them know that he was investigating a complaint.  I suggested that he ask them about the issue, and whether they could prove that they had made the refund.

The very next day, I got a phone call from a manager at Crossroad Auto Group saying that the would send out a check that very day and asked me to call off the dispute that I had lodged with Mastercard.  He didn’t want to give me a refund check and then get dinged by Mastercard for that amount as well.  I agreed to call Mastercard and found from their representative that they wouldn’t be having their bank do a refund for another 30 days of zero response from the company.  I called the manager back and told him what I learned, and that once we had received and processed the check, I would consider the dispute resolved.

Mom got the check in a  couple of days, and deposited it.  I then closed the dispute with Mastercard and notified the manager as well as the sergeant.  The sergeant agreed to file a permanent police report on this issue so that the next person making a complaint about this company won’t hear “They have a clean record – no reports or issues.”  What I inferred from talking to the manager who was neither apologetic nor remorseful is that they (The company) does try to “retain the business” – making it difficult to get refunds.

Because the collateral paperwork from “Auto Assure” of Plano Texas and “Crossroad Auto Group” of Plantation, FL is so  much the same, there must be some connection between the two.  And, if you check out the Plano, Texas BBB, you will see lots of complaints similar to mine against “Auto Assure”.  Just think about it.

What I learned was that you need to keep on making the complaint to different parties until you get the traction you need.  More importantly, it is really worthwhile to thank the people who try to help you.  I wrote a letter of thanks to the sergeant, copying his commander who replied to me that he had forwarded the letter to the Chief.

The refund was requested on 8/21/15 and finally resolved on 11/10/15.

Traction from Plantation Police Department

I am really happy to report that I got a return email from the Plantation Police Department.  A sergeant in the Investigation Division had received a copy of my complaint, but the attachments had been knocked off.  I was able to resend the attachments to the sergeant and he acknowledged receipt.

He said he wasn't sure if it was a criminal of civil matter, but would review the documentation I sent and let me know in a day or two if they thought it was a criminal matter.

Really, I think this is great news, and the sergeant's response will guide me in further efforts for recovery.

Interesting.. Nobody there....

After getting ZERO response to my email to the Plantation Police in a week,

I decided to do a Google search of the address and got no "Crossroad Auto Group:"

What is there is a copy shop.  They likely have a private mailbox service.  But no brick and mortar entitiy or even a "Suite"

I think it'd time to escalate to the next level up.  Also branching out to the "other" company involved in this deal... LIBERTY STF, INC. 2660 Palm Aire Drive, Pompano Beach, FL 33069

Continued Activity.

I've not been idle in the intervening time.

1 Contacted Mastercard who agreed to do an investigation into the matter.  It sounds like they are sending mail and waiting for a response, but it is so far the most traction I've gotten on this project.

2. I put in a "review" at http://www.bizapedia.com/fl/CROSSROAD-AUTO-GROUP-INC.html .

3. I contacted the Plantation Florida police department telling them that I wanted to file a fraud complaint.  I'm hoping to get some sort of acknowledgement from the police inside of a week.

Next steps will be to contact various state agencies to see if they will look into this.  Also, I intend to keep posting "reviews" until Google equates Crossroad Auto Group Plantation, FL with Crooks and Fraud

Further status 10/7

After reading another complaint on this website, I made the decision to terminate the payments that mom was making to AutoAssure,LLC.  The similarities between the collateral material sent to mom from both of these places was too much when one was accused of non payment of a claim and I'm having problems getting refunded from the other.  You get the feeling that you've been SLIMED like in GhostBusters.
