I listed a car for sale on Craig's List in AZ and received a text message asking me to run a VIN report on the car. The person was very specific about which website to use, which was http://chief.thevinchecker.space?chief.
I thought it looked odd for a web address, but I checked it out. I told the prospective "buyer" that they wanted $12.95 to run the report, and that I didn't think it was necessary because the car is in brand new condition and a 2014 model.
This person seemed very anxious to see the car right away, so I took a chance and purchased the report. I immediately knew something was up, because I kept getting error messages that the PDF document could not be opened. I tried numerous times throughout the evening, and even downloaded the latest Adobe software, to be sure I could open the document.
I texted the person back and said I could not open the report, and asked if he/she still wanted to see the car the next day. I never got a response.
I'm out nearly $13, but I am most worried about the security of my credit card. What a scam!
