I'm glad I searched Google and came across this site.
I met a Haldane rep at a Westec career fair. I got a call two days later to set up an appointment. I specifically asked if this was a fee-based service because I had just gotten a call from a similar company that I met at the job fair and they were at least up front about it. The admin said, "No." Lie #1.
I went in to meet Connie Thompson in San Jose. Very nice woman. Like the other comments posted here, they gave me the sales pitch -- complimented my background and experience and said they could help me, but they wanted me to bring my wife in. Why the hell would they want that? That's when I started to get the sinking feeling that I was in a time-share sales pitch. They claimed they had a network of people they could tap in to, and that 43% (their number, not mine) of jobs are created for people, not posted. Lie #2. While this is true of some jobs, it's not 43%. My wife has worked in HR for 10 years and can confirm that.
I probed to ask how they made their money and asked if it was fee-based. Why, yes it was. Deception #1. But they didn't volunteer that info. Instead, they wanted me to bring in my wife for the sales pitch first.
How much would it cost? They couldn't tell me right there. Deception #2. Bull sh*t, to put it mildly. Connie would need to pass my resume on to a "consultant". What the hell was her purpose, then? Sales, I guess.
At least she told me the fee would need to be paid up front. Why? Becuase there wouldn't be any incentive to help me if I didn't pay first. Plus, that's just how it works. Lie #3. I bet real estate agents would love that arguement. Pay them first. There should be more incentive to help you if you haven't paid! If you've already paid, there is no more incentive! d**n, I'm quite insulted they think I'm that dumb.
Don't be fooled. At least I just wasted an hour. It could've been a lot worse. Save your time and money.
