Donna, you may be far from alone in your Apple computer problem. Here is an account of my iMac problem. Keep in mind that my computer has remained in the same location since purchased new. It has been used only for basic computer processing and internet access. It does not get used daily, and it has been well cared for.

My 17-inch flat panel Apple iMac display just stopped working. The screen appears black but you can see the windows faintly in the background after the machine boots up. I did some research and found that Apple has had an inverter assembly problem in the past. There is a class action recently settled on this matter regarding the Apple Studio Displays.

Other Apple computer owner display complaints continue. After taking my computer in to the "genius" bar, I was told that the problem was most likely the inverter assembly. I was quoted a cost of $39 for the part and $135 for the labor. Just today, I got a call from the Apple Store and the techician said that the problem is not the inverter but the LCD panel itself. The news was that this part was $389! With the addition of the labor, this repair would be over $500!! Is the LCD replacement something a novice can or should attempt? Is this repair ludicrous on a machine that is four years old? Is the only option attaching a different monitor to the system? This is unfortunate considering the display is what MADE this computer!

Clearly from my research, Apple has some "display issues" that are yet to be resolved. I'd like to know if there are other iMac who have well-cared for and conservatively-used Apple computers with this display problem. Please report your iMac display problem here;-) Any wisdom from the more technically-expert readers would be most appreciated! I would like to make a consumer suggestion: notify Apple in formal, certified letter so that there is a record of the complaint. Otherwise, we, the owners may be the ones left covering the widespread problems.

Just so you know. You can purchase a new 19" LCD monitor for under $250 at almost any computer store. Example. Samsung 932B 19" LCD monitor at Comp USA website is $249. $500 to repair a monitor? Naw, it's cheaper to buy a new one.

A few things to know 1. DO NOT attempt to do this repair yourself. Trust me, it will only cause worse trouble. 2. A four year old LCD is not immune to this type of problem. If you had said it was 6 months or a year old, I would have said CRAZY!GET YOUR MONEY BACK! But no, it is four years old, and computers, and LCD's are not meant to last forever. 3. $500 is not too terrible. In fact, it is not bad at all. Something you must know is, with all computers, the screen is the most valuable part of the computer. When the screen goes out, the computer is now, essentially, worthless. But try going and buying a 17" LCD display for $500. Wont find one from apple, or probably anyone. 4. I mean no disrespect when I tell you this: Your computer is not worth the $500 repair. Even if you repaired the screen and then tried to sell it, you might get $300 out of it. Maybe. It is four years old. Consider buying an inexpensive screen to go with your computer, especially if the computer is just for recreational use. Best of luck to you!
