Affinion Group electronically took without consent from my bank account; Here's how they did it:

My bank (BB&T) offered me life insurance thru The Hartford insurance co.for 8 dollars a month debit from my checking account. I signed and agreed for this-Great deal! This was Sept. 98.  In Oct, 2008, Affinion bought out and took over the Hartford accounts. They started debiting 32.00 dollars !! from my checking account every month. I at no time authorized this insane 400% RATE HIKE, nor would I ever.

When I discovered in Sept of 09 that Affinion Group had been electronically taking 24 (twentyfour) more dollars a mo. from my bank account I called them. The representative mailed me a statement of cancellation that I had to fill out and have notarized at the bank and sent back to them with a filled out " refund "request.

Several days later I got a letter from Affinion Group, from a Delores N. Robinson (Her title) Affinion Benefits Group Plan Administrator; The letter stated that " We are unable to refund additional premiums blah blah blah!" Their number 800-860-7093.

WARNING TO ALL:

Check your bank account debit statements and see if this company is debiting your account too without your consent!  They owe me 264 dollars that they electronically transferred from my bank account without my permission!! They refuse to pay and sent me a copy of the ORIGINAL agreement from The Hartford Insurance co. This only hurts their case more. (Apparently Affinion Group must have done this with others as well and is depending on the un-detected percentages for a mass profit) How many others have yet to detect this? For me, It went undetected for 11 months!

I am looking for an attorney for this case.  Affinion representatives claim they mailed me an "opt out clause". Guess what, I NEVER GOT IT! ; Do you not think that if a company was raising a rate because of a takeover, that a rate hike of 400% would have to be authorized in writing or by recorded phone contract. AHH Yeah!! Who in their right mind would authorize an over night 4xs rate increase...

Unfortunately for you when you signed up for the Insurance you were told in your terms of service that "the price could be increased at any time without notice and you would then be billed at the current fee" I read this script to customers every single day...All programs with Affinion Group have a terms of service agreement which include this statement. Next time read or listen to the fine print...its perfectly legal and happens with many companies not just Affinion. Don't hate the player hate the game!

Dear other customer,

I too have had an expericence with Affinion Group.  But it differs from yours.

I had a Hartford Life Insurance policy as well for several years.   About 2 years ago (2006 or 2007) I recieved a letter from the Hartford mentioning the sale, and seing an opt out note.  Not that I fully understood options.   I decided not to act, which meant that my policy would stay in force.   So, although you may have not received a letter, some letters were sent out.

Similarly like you, my premiums were being deducted from my account.  Not long after the switch in companies the deduction changed.  However, I swear mine went down by like $2 dollars.  However, I should note that I was never paying $8.  I was and am still young, and my charge is $21 per month.

I was researching how to surrender a whole life policy that my father had taken out in my name when I came across your post.   Just to be sure, I called the company, and am having them send my another certificate of insurance along with a schedule.  NO term life insurance that I have ever seen is level for more than 10 years at a time.  My policy with this group increases every 5 years.   Finally I should note, notwitstanding your personal health situation,  you can always get cheaper term life insurance if you take and pass a physical exam.

I have had my share of bad experiences with companies.  Fortunately, I did not experience the same lack of commuincation.   Finally, and I am not being snarky,  you should really check your statement as often as possible.  I too found a company, deducting from my account montly.  I'd purchased one software item, and the signed me up for some monthly service (or at the very least had a purposely confusing web-page).  It was completely unfair.  I called them and they refunded the entire amount becase they could see that I never used the service.   With insurance it is a bit more difficult, because if you had pasted away during the time (that they were deducting the increased amount) your family would have gotten the insurance payment.  So it a hard call.  Good luck on your refund...but based on my experience, I think you may just be an isolated case of not having recieved your mail from the Hartford or the other company...did you check with your faimly?

Good Luck

Attempt At Contacting Affinion Group

Today I called the 800-860-7093 number that My refund rejection letter included;  I recieved a customer service rep. who claimed he could not help me so I asked to speak to his supervisor. I spoke with a woman who said that she could not assist me in this matter per company policy. She gave me the address (which I already had) to "Corporate" headquarters.

The supervisor stated that "corporate" did not  have a customer oriented phone number. She suggested that I would have to contact them again via mail that it was the only way to contact them. I wrote another demand letter for my refund today and mailed it.

I had that life insurance for 11 years and formerly had no problems with them debiting my account. It was only one of my bank accounts and a minor one at that. I did not always check the balances in there because it was a petty cash account. For someone who was in financial hardship, this unanticipated withdrawal from their account could cost them (major for them) several overdraft fees.

This is to help inform others as well as to what could happen to them.

Finally, To "Susan"

If you have a  constuct about corporate-contract/law then state your credentials. (Juris Dr., Para Legal etc.) You listed your whereabouts as "Somewhere". If you want to be taken seriously than take you seriously...

It took you 11 months to notice that $32 instead of $8 a month was taken out of your account?

It is a too late to claim you never received the opt out papers. A month or two yes, 11 months no.

Pay closer attention to your accounts and you wont have this issue. Heck, you are a criminals dream.
