In November of last year I went to Aarons rental and picked out a refrigerator because I desperately needed one, within a few weeks I went back in to pay the total amount due.  The manager of the store asked me NOT to make the last payment so they could count me as a customer; they had to prove to upper management that they had enough customers so they could get a second truck to make deliveries.  I foolishly agreed, it was only going to be $89.00 and being the person I am I try to help everyone when they need help.  She said she only needed me to hold off on the last payment for only a while.  I asked her to call me to let me know when to go in and make the last payment.

Well in September I received that phone call. I was talking to a young man and he asked me if I had trouble making my payments, I told him no I could come in two weeks to make that payment.  He became very rude with me telling me I needed to go in immediately to make the payment otherwise they would come and take the fridge away. I was very confused by his remark and I told him that him I was in no position to pay until two more weeks and then I would have to see if I could afford to make the full payment.  He became very irate and I eventually hung up on him.  The next day I went in to talk to them when the manager informed me that I owed a very large amount, I argued with her and reminded her of what she had asked me to do, she did remember and she said she would take off all the late charges and interest that accumulated over the months.  She then informed me that I still owed over $800.00 but that the good news was I was still paying less than what the original financed cost would be.

Well to make a long story short, I have been trying to make payments to them but I am still getting harassing phone calls from them with threats to take my fridge away even though I have been making payments, I finally had enough today and told them to come pick up the fridge.  Tomorrow, the day before Thanksgiving, they will pick up the fridge.  I am trying to get the word out on this to have others be aware of how Aarons has bamboozled me, I only owed $89.00 but have already paid and additional $200.00 but they screwed me over.

Just an update on my story.  They were suppose to come pick up the refrigerator the day before Thanksgiving but they did not come to get it nor did I get a call that night.  Monday November 26 I received a call from one of the drivers, they wanted to know what a convenient time would be for me to come pick up the refrigerator and I told them I worked until 5:00 so anytime after that.  We made arrangements for between 5:30-6:00.  I waited and no one came by and no one called.  In the meantime I found a used refrigerator for $50.00 that we brought into the house.  Tonight, November 27, 2012 I got a call from the Manager, she made an offer to me.  Recant my story and the refrigerator was mine paid in full.  I agreed to do so.  Although I am not able to take my original post off of here I want to say thank you to the Manager for correcting a mistake, that is all I ever wanted.  We both apologized to each other and it looks as if we will both be moving on from here.  I just feel very happy that a mistake was corrected and I am able to keep my refrigerator at the agreed original price.  I am a very happy customer now!

The additional money owed...

sounds like it was due to going past the "90 days same as cash" date. When you first get the item you have 90 days to make the "cash amount" payment and the item will be yours with no further payments. However, if you go past the 90 days you have to complete out your payments per contract to own the item. Got the fridge in November 2011. A few weeks later made payment leaving $89 balance. In February 2012 the 90 days period expired so you owed the full contract price not the 90 day price. They contact you in September 2012 (10 months after getting fridge and 8-9 months after making payment) and tell you that you owe more than $89. Did it not cross your mind between December or January (whenever you made your second payment) and September to contact the store and ask about making your final payment? Sounds like a case of improper communication on both sides, but read the contract you signed and it will detail the amount you owe.

Yes, she did make that statement to me to hold off on the final payment, and she has admitted to me she remembers that very well.  I made two payments to the store, the original first payment on the day I ordered the refrigerator, then two weeks later I made a payment and  in one more week the money I had been waiting for came in so I went to pay them off.  I have every receipt and I have my print out of payments from the store.  Three weeks not three months owing only $89.00 not over $800.00.

Why was I surprised by the young mans remark? Because he became very irate right away and as far as I knew I only owed $89. When I went in and talked to the manager she apologized for the way the man spoke to me but in her words she said that they deal with people on a daily basis who just don't want to pay, so they have to be aggressive.  Did I put away $89 to make the payment, in all honestly no I did not.  I don't make much money and sometimes life happens.  He called me on my payday when my rent is due, my next payday, in two weeks was the one I could afford to pay the $89.00.  I ended up making a payment of $100 that time and another $100 the following month but the phone calls and harassment didn't stop, they called me during the time when my rent was due, I told them as I had before that it would have to wait until the following pay day but he said they were coming to repossess the refrigerator.  I had enough of the harassment and told them to come get it today...as of yet, they haven't come for it.  You can believe me if you want or not.  This is how it happened.

Hind sight is 20/20, I wished I had just paid it off in full as intended yes, I wish I would have followed up sooner.  This was a lesson learned.

So the manager asked you to not make your last payment because they need to show that they have enough customers to justify a second truck.  Okay, let's say that she actually did suggest this, and you being a nice person went along with it.  But even with that your report still has a big issue.

You stated you got the refrigerator back in November 2011, and it was a "few weeks" when you went in to make the final payment.  So even if we figure a few weeks in your calendar means 3 months, that puts you at Feburary 2012.  Yet according to you the next time they contacted you was September....7 months later.

Even though you told them to contact you when they want you to make a payment..didn't it ever occur to you that perhaps you may want to follow up?

I was very confused by his remark and I told him that him I was in no position to pay until two more weeks and then I would have to see if I could afford to make the full payment.

- Why were you confused?  You knew you still had this payment to make.  So why did you tell them you need 2 weeks to make this payment, and even then perhaps may not even be able to make the full payment(which according to you was $89).  Back in November you knew you were going to need to make the payment, so you should have put that $89 aside so when they did call all you would have to do is turn it over.  But that is not what you did, and that is probably why you didn't follow up.   Instead of saving the money..you spent it and probably went week after week hoping that they would never catch up with you.

Bet I am very close...so how about giving the full story.
