I came across a car listed on carsforsale.com for $16,995 and emailed the seller (auto trader wholesale inc) with an offer. They agreed to save me $1,000, and during our conversation, I specifically mentioned that I would be paying in full using both a credit and debit card. However, the first issue arose on June 13, 2023, when my girlfriend and I drove three hours from PA to NJ to purchase the car. When we got there the auto trader wholesale inc seller recalculated the total and informed me that the car would cost $18,000. Despite recognizing this as an obvious bait-and-switch situation, I decided to proceed with the purchase. However, when it was time to pay and complete the paperwork, they surprised me by stating an additional 5% charge will be added for using a credit or debit card, bringing the total to $19,000. This information was not mentioned in our original email conversation. Nevertheless, I chose to proceed because my girlfriend and I had already traveled a long distance, and I didn't want to waste my pregnant girlfriend's time. I should also mention that upon reviewing the receipt, I noticed that the advertised price of $16,995 was not mentioned anywhere, which would have been expected along with the additional charges.

The second problem arose when my girlfriend went to have the car inspected as the inspection sticker was about to expire in July 2023. The mechanic requested the title to initiate the inspection process. I contacted the dealership, and they gave me two options: either drive another three hours to pick up the title or pay for it to be delivered to me, even though they had originally promised to send the title without mentioning any additional fees for delivery. I consulted with the NJ DMV and other car sales professionals to attempt to get my title another way and they confirmed that the dealership should have provided me with the title on the same day of purchase, and I should have left with it. However, the dealership has not yet resolved this issue, and the temporary license plate on the car has expired as of July 12, 2023 rendering the car ilegal to use.

Not only did you agree over and over to get screwed, you also failed to see this $595 BOGUS, ADD-ON, PHONEY FEE for doing paperwork! What a con man's dream! It DOES NOT COST almost $600 to do paperwork! That's as obvious as the rising sun but you went along with THAT anyway! Maybe you didn't even bother to READ what you were agreeing to! Anytime ANY dealer adds these PURELY FAKE FEES, its is a very clear DEAD GIVEAWAY honesty and integrity are NOT in practice there. There were MULTIPLE opportunities for you to WALK OUT. But no, YOU went along with everything and rewarded them with their profit, including you giving them a $595 FAKE FEE! What a deal!!!!!!!

As mentioned previously, individuals who fall victim to scams often fail to realize they have been deceived until it becomes apparent to them. Being human, I am susceptible to making mistakes, and that is precisely what happened here. Whether the mistake was placing trust in the wrong people or not carefully examining the receipt, I have acknowledged the error and gained valuable insights from it. Furthermore, I did not consider the $500 as part of the scam because, as I mentioned earlier, I believed it to be the only truthful aspect of the receipt, based on my past experiences with purchasing cars. However, I appreciate your observation and thank you for bringing it to my attention. I hope that anyone who reads my ripoffreport post will also see your comment and learn about the crucial evidence to watch out for when identifying an auto sales scam.

You agreed to purchase the vehicle sight unseen. That alerted the seller that you were an easy target. You should have negotiated for a lower than advertised price but instead, you agreed to pay more. That is amusing.

You changed your excuse:

In your initial report you wrote, "Despite recognizing this as an obvious bait-and-switch situation, I decided to proceed with the purchase." In your second statement, you wrote, "It was only later, when a friend who owns a car dealership pointed out that the advertised price was not mentioned anywhere in the documentation or receipt, that I realized I had fallen victim to a bait and switch tactic." Pick a story and stick with it.

You changed your name too; olad or olaf?

There is no better way to shop for a vehicle than to consult a friend who owns an auto dealership. (That's an ideal connection).

The initial statement remains unchanged; only additional details have been provided. If I were to fully narrate the entire story, it would require writing a book. Initial statement: "Despite recognizing this as an obvious bait-and-switch situation" Revised statement: "I initially believed that the dealership was trustworthy (AND WOULD PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE EXPLANATION REGARDING THE ADDITIONAL CHARGES) that escalated the price" Meaning: I am not a lawyer and WAS unfamiliar with the term "bait and switch." I simply went to purchase a car advertised at $16,000. However, when I arrived at Auto Trader Wholesale Inc. dealership, they informed me that the price was $18,000. While I found the price increase QUESTIONABLE, based on my experience of buying cars, I knew that the tag price is never the final price. Nonetheless, the additional charges should not have amounted to $3,000 or more than the tagged price. Since I am from Pennsylvania and bought the car in New Jersey, I assumed that it was just a different car-buying experience in New Jersey. However, when I returned home and discussed my concerns with my friend, who is a car dealer, he looked at the receipt and stated, "If you bought a car advertised at $16,000, then $16,000 should appear on the receipt, with additional charges itemized separately, leading to the total." At that moment, he pointed out that it was a "bait and switch" tactic. We never truly know when we are being scammed; we may question the possibility, but we only discover the truth when we find out. Regarding why I didn't consult my friend, who is a car dealer, though I don't believe this information is necessary, I was specifically searching for a particular type of car that my friend didn't sell. He offered to assist me in finding it through his connections, but he couldn't find the specific type at that time. Since I was running out of time to replace my girlfriend's malfunctioning car and wanted to give her the car she desired as a pregnancy present, I had to act quickly and get her a new car. I also mentioned before that I am not concerned about the financial loss; I have already moved on and learned a valuable lesson from the experience. The only issue I have now with Auto Trader Wholesale Inc. is that they haven't delivered the title as originally promised. Once again, I want to emphasize that my original post serves as a warning to anyone planning to do business with Auto Trader Wholesale Inc.

To begin with, throughout the entire purchasing process, I initially believed that the dealership was trustworthy and would provide a comprehensive explanation regarding the additional charges that escalated the price from the advertised $16,000 to the $18,000 reflected on the receipt. Given that I had convinced my pregnant girlfriend to endure a three-hour drive to acquire the car featured on Auto Trader Wholesale Inc.'s website for $16,000, I felt a sense of responsibility to uphold my commitment and leave with the vehicle. It was only later, when a friend who owns a car dealership pointed out that the advertised price was not mentioned anywhere in the documentation or receipt, that I realized I had fallen victim to a bait and switch tactic. Essentially, the $18,000 price tag solely represented the cost of the car, with only a $500 charge being an actual additional fee. Now, as to why I'm here, as you put it, to "wine and cry." I have already come to terms with the fact that I fell for the bait and switch scam, accepting my loss. However, my concern arises from the dealership's request for payment to deliver my title, despite their initial promise to send it. Moreover, I believe that sharing my entire experience is significant not only for myself but also for the benefit of others who might be considering purchasing from Auto Trader Wholesale Inc....

YOU stated multiple times you overlooked the various PRICE INCREASES and bought the car. In other words, YOU REWARDED THEM for them playing a con-game with you. Now you come here to cry, whine and stomp your feet because of the consequences YOU CAUSED because YOU don't have the slightest backbone to say "NO"!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU??????????????????
