Recently I was laid-off at Walden University without reason. Being in IT staff support, I was a dedicated system administrator that was in great standing with all staff. Until Sylvan bought up Walden University in 2002, and the butchering of IT began. In an effort to demonstrate power out of his L.A. office, the new IT director Charles Blake fired all IT staff by saying: your skill sets were evaluated and don't fit into the new scheme anymore.

By asking what skill sets those were and why we were never notified about this, he said refused answers and had us escort out of the building. After so many years of dedicated work, that is what the Sylvan butcher managers give you! We didn't even have a chance to say goodbye to our friends and co-workers, we were simply pushed out the door.

To everybody who wants to start working at Walden University or Sylvan/Canter: don't do it. All three locations in L.A., Baltimore, and Minneapolis together have a manager-worker ratio of 1:1, which provides vast grounds for political infights and illogical business decisions. Staff morale is at its bottom, and if the economy was any better, their offices would be empty,

What can I do in such a situation? Sylvan has dozens of lawyers that the little man from the street cannot afford. How can I stand up against such injustice? We were never given job evaluations, or were formerly put on probation (what for I can't imagine since we provided excellent service). This was such a setup!

Any helpful comments are greatly appreciated!!!

I have considered going to Walden online for advanced degree but am going elsewhere for personal reasons based on factors I have researched. However, in today's society in the USA, it is a "right to work" employment world meaning anyone can be terminated, or quit without reason or due course. Call it unfair, and many times it is, but I have seen thousands lose jobs without warning in the last several years and never getting reason. The managers have the advantage of bonuses at year end for what they conceivably save the company, not much different than the insurance industry adjustors and agents, etc... Business today in America does not operate with the mentlaity it used to on many fronts. Now, I have also seen persons try to sue the employer and go to the district court levels firstly after they talked to both State & Federal Wage & Hour Bureaus, but it is time consuming; and sadly, the employers and firms do expend huge funds to hire and secure the top law firms nationally for their causes first, so it is very hard for the average decent hard working person to even fight them regardless of the situation. it is not a level playing field by no means. I feel sorry for your loss, as I, my wife, and many others I know nationally have lost work or employment for a host of reasons after many years of education, job skills, work expereince, etc behind us all. Going one step further even, talking of all the truly experienced people who lost their jobs, that it creates another cycle nobody is talking about yet, and that is, by losing your job(s) which may have been utilized by banks/lenders for various housing or auto loans originally, when that cashflow stops or is reduced, you then get into trouble because you cannot meet your financial obligations as before. Then your credit gets ruined, and the lenders can make a "note call" on your property and then forclosure begins. It is happening right now, yet hardly reported, and it has nothing to do with the borrowers many times, except they become a victim of their circumstances and they are hurt when they are fired or laid off from jobs they were working hard at to meet their obligations- See the trickle effect people??? But with the USA being part of the global economy today, it has become an "employers market" whereas there are so many people out of work, increased US population, and fewer employers in USA as in previous generations, so they can do whatever they wish knowing in the end, there will be someone desperate enough to work for lower wages just to have a job- regardless that job many times does not pay a living wage. This is something I warned about years ago with NAFTA and other programs instituted and today we are seeing the cultural and economic change occurring across the whole USA. It will never be like it used to be. In close as example, here in western NC region, what the newer younger generation human resource managers say are great starting wages and benefits are what I used to make back in mid 1980's. Just think about this for a minute. Average technical job here pays maybe in range of $12.00/hour including degree requirement! NO wonder so many are able to qualify for welfare and medicaid programs in NC just to survive upon.

Point of clarification. Walden University is NOT owned by Sylvan Learning Centers. It is owned by Laureate Inc., a separate company.
