Wal Mart and Telecheck Wal Mart honored a check without proper identification-Telecheck provided my driver's license number to Wal Mart Pineville Louisiana
On 12/15/2014 I observed a pending deduction from my checking account which I did not make or authorize as an ACH debit in the amount of $278.78 at Wal Mart in Pineville, La. Since I live over 200 miles from Pineville, La. have never been to the city and knowing that Wal Mart uses telecheck as payment guarantor for all checks presented for purchases I contacted telecheck. It was verified that the check was approved by telecheck. I contacted Wal Mart in Pineville, La speaking with the cash office and was informed that no identification was requested at the time of purchase and that my account number (driver's license number) was provided to Wal Mart by Telecheck.
At no time did I authorize telecheck to furnish my driver's license to Wal Mart in Pineville, La. Doing some more checking I learned that the check number that was presented to Wal Mart for the purchase was a check number from a check that I had written over 1 year ago in the amount of $750.00 to my landlord in payment for the monthly housing costs. The check was deposited and I have the cancelled check. I checked all checks from the date that this check was written 12/01/2013 through and including 12/15/2014. I am not missing any checks and have all checks in sequence accounted for. I closed the checking account immediately and opened a new account. Telecheck now refuses to authorize any checks presented to merchants that use their service if I present a check drawn on the new bank account. This has presented me with lots of mental anguish, loss of work and unnecessary expense attempting to get everything corrected.
I rarely if ever use a check at a Wal Mart store since I have a charge account at Wal Mart. I use the Wal Mart credit card or pay cash. I fault Wal Mart for not asking for photo identification which would have prevented the transaction from occurring in the first place. I also fault Telecheck for providing my driver's license number to Wal Mart when approving a check transaction that I didn't make. The person making the purchase is given the check back along with a receipt for the purchase which has my bank routing number, my full bank account number and my driver's license number on it. I have filed a police report, obtained a photo of the customer making the transaction, filed a fraud report with telecheck and will be consulting my attorney in addition to the attorney general's office in the State of Louisiana.
There needs to be some type of legal action that can be taken against telecheck for giving out confidential information. Wal Mart needs to get smart and realize that telecheck is costing money needlessly by them having to pay for a contract fee for telecheck to approve a customer's check and is going to lose customers from these fraud transactions. I am paying out my account with Wal Mart and refuse to shop there or at any other merchant that accepts telecheck as check guarantor. Furthermore I am going to post a comment on every comment board that I can find about this transaction.
