UPMC EAST is a new hospital in Monroeville, PA on the corner of Route 22 and 48 where the Howard Johnsons / Palace Inn used to be. I was admitted

there by my family doctor for a bronchitis infection to be fed an antibiotic intravaneously and although I was only there for about 36 hours, it was a

HORRIBLE experience.

They have a bunch of new wave nurses and nursing assistants who can only function by pushing around these mobile computer kiosks

on wheels. They can't handle the simplest task without that task being identified on their computerized list of "things to do." 5 or 6 times

a day a girl would come around to take my vitals BP, Pulse and Temperature and they always came pushing their computer around. When I asked the nurses for an extra pillow I literally had to ask 4 different nurses without success and then get up and wander into an unoccupied room and steal one.

I have 2 medicines which I've been taking for 5 years which must not and cannot be taken within 2 hours of each other. I had to fight with the woman who dispenses pills when I told her I wasn't going to take them both at the same time.   Suddenly she thought she knew more about these to medications than I did.   Even the pharmacist in this loony bin was not aware that you don’t dispense these 2 pills to the same person at the same time.

The first night there I was awakened at 4:00 am to have blood drawn. The results of which were not reported to my doctor until 10:00 am. When I asked him about it on the first morning he told me not to worry that there was no more "bloodwork" scheduled for me. So there I am on the second night a sick man coughing his head off trying to finally get a decent night of sleep for the first time in about a week, and what do the do? They wake me again at 4:00 am to draw blood saying that “it was still on the schedule”.

It was shortly after this that I removed the IV tube from my arm myself, refused further treatments, called my Doctor on my cell phone and told him I was checking myself out before they killed me. The nurses argued that 4:00 is the only time they draw blood and I maintained that when you have a sick man who needs his sleep that you can and you must take it when he's awake like 6:30 or 7:00 am.

Plus the nurses who did the blood should never apply for work in a blood bank. When you put a needle in their hands they were like Doctor Mengele. I know this place is new (opened July 2012) and maybe has growing pains, but in my short visit there I could definitely see some similarities between this place and an HMO organization that was talked about on 60-Minutes last Sunday where ER Physicians are evaluated by hospital administrators on how high a percentage of their patients they admitted. I felt that every effort was being made to jack up my bill as high as possible. I will never go back to this place, not if you held a gun to my head.   I'll switch doctors first, UPMC East Monroeville could use some training in Personalized Customer Service and Patient Care.

Avoid this place like the plague.
