Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I was looking to break into the acting business when I came across an advertisement in the help wanted section of the Asbury Park Press calling all actors and models to get work in the field and make decent money at it. Figuring I'd call and learn more about it, they wouldn't give out any real information over the phone and just wanted to make an appointment for me to come in. Seeing as this was the only way to find out what they were about I did and went in a few days later.

There are two gentlemen that own it named Jim and John and there is usually a young girl working as their secretary on duty. They'll have you fill out a questionnaire asking the usual personal questions and also if you'd be interested in modeling work (even though they never get any) as well even if you're an actor. Then Jim, the heavyset man will call you in and have you do a reading. But the thing is, no matter how well you do it's only okay and you need acting lessons. Not just any acting lessons but their acting lessons of course. If you don't they won't be able to submit you for principal work (which by the way they don't do anyway). Later on you'll find out from others that even the best actors get told this and is a standard line. These two are scam artists and are just out to milk people not actually help them progress their career.

Jim will then ask if you have already gotten your head shots taken and if so that he sees them. Unsurprisingly they are never good enough (and this was confirmed with many people as well as they won't accept any taken by even the best photographers). He will then say you need to get Universal Talent head shots and will show examples of what they look like. However these head shots cost $495 for only 100 of them and add on an extra $100 if you sign up for the class (plus tax). I asked for more time to think about it but the key to their whole swindle is to pressure you into making quick decisions right on the spot. He will sometimes even call John over to double team you and through pressure making the customer think they need to do it. You can almost tell right off the back that the whole thing is an act and that it seems very well rehearsed.

If you do decide to get your pictures taken they lead you next door where there's a photo store that does them. You pick out the one you like best out of the proofs and then come back in 2 weeks to receive the final copies. However you don't even get all 100 as the agency takes half of them (50) to keep on file. Most of these head shots are terrible anyway and have Universal Talent written on all of them along with their phone number. So they're pretty much useless to wherever you send them out too.

Now they can actually get you a background role as an extra here and there but they are very low paying and few and far in between. Usually they're for something really trivial as an audience member or such. Even with their initial high fees they charge a whopping 20% commission on everything you earn which is very high for an alleged agency such as this.

As if the whole fraud of duping aspiring show business entertainers out of their hard earned bucks with the first part isn't bad enoughthey constantly tell you that you need new head shots and that they're running low every time you step into their office. This goes for even if you just started there. When asked how much new head shots will cost thinking you'll get a discount, the only reply you'll receive is $495 for another 100, in which they'll retain half of them for their file again. If you say no, then they'll tell you about the new class that's about to start up and how you need to take it. This not only goes for just when you come in but they'll call you about every week or so asking if you're running out of head shots or if you're interested in registering for the class, it's like you can't escape.

Basically when it comes down to it, they make their money on selling purposeless classes that anyone can be teaching and the highest priced head shots you will ever come across that are just about worthless. There are no refunds and they make you sign the agreement on the spot. Unfortunately you will never make your money back with them. You will always wind up spending far more (usually a highly disproportionate amount) then you can ever possibly earn.

If you do go on a job for them and meet others that they represent all you'll hear are complaints about how they got jerked around too and lost a lot of money and are also in the process of finding a real agent. You'll also eventually come to notice that they've never represented an actor/model for any decent length of time and it's obvious why as all the head shots of clients they represent hung in the office are all relatively new. It's amazing how many people are falling for thisso don't be one of them. They have to be making a fortune off of peoples' naivete. They'll tell you they are a licensed talent agency, however they are not a licensed talent agencyat least not in the way the legitimate ones are.

They're office is also extremely seedy, in fact you won't even see a computer throughout any of it, which goes to show you how professional they are. Jim and John are simply looking to make the fast buck by selling people dreams and having it end there. They might suck you in by mentioning famous names and having movie posters hung up throughout but in the end everyone that has worked with them or shelled out any money has highly regretted it. So be extremely forewarned!!!

Only Stick With Talent Agencies that you KNOW are legitimate!

#2Consumer Comment

I have been in several films and I always stick with the talent agencies who PAY. The legitimate ones. Each state should maintain a listing of LEGITIMATE CASTING AGENCIES with their film commission office. When some outfit claiming BIG HOLLYWOOD CONNECTIONS comes in, then why are they having you meet them at some rinky-dinky motel or hotel or in some shopping mall. Most of the people I know want a head shot and a short film resume of work that you have done. More of them want a link to a video of your work on YouTube for instance OR they want to see a DVD of you. They do NOT DO A CATTLE CALL like the fakers --or IF they do, not that often! At least that has been MY experience.

In Concurrence With Ripoff Report: #182729, Ref. Universal Talent of Wayne, NJ

#3Consumer Comment

Tue, April 29, 2008

Trust me when I tell you that everything said in a previous ripoff report (please see Report: #182729, from Raef) about Universal Talent of Wayne, NJ is absolutely, positively true! I too, was a victim of their (John & Jim) scam a couple of years back. Add to that, that a former friend of mine named Glenn Vincent-whom I had known for over 40 years, & who was an "Acting Teacher" employed by Universal Talent et al of Wayne, NJ-didn't even have the courtesy of telling me that Universal Talent of Wayne, NJ was just a scam. The loss of the money I laid-out on this scam has more-than-since been replaced; I eventually was able to join the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and got paid some good and honest Union wages. In short, I got over the "money part" of it all long ago. Being screwed by a so-called "friend"? That will take a bit more time to get over, I suppose. With that said, what is my advice to any serious, aspiring Actor? It's this....don't let anyone disuade you from your dream, but do your homework and research first, and don't trust anyone but yourself. Most especially, don't even trust anyone that you've known for many years, as they can screw you just as easily as a total stranger can. Best of luck & success to all, & thank God for websites like this! roneg Hasbrouck heights, NJ USA

I WISH YOU SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT FOR ALL YOU CONSUMERS LOOKING AT THIS SITE . UNIVERSAL TALENT IS A LICENSED ACTING AGENCY REPRESENTING NEW TALENT FOR MOVIES , TV SHOWS AND COMMERCIALS . WHEN YOU MAKE AN APPOINTMENT YOU ARE ASKED TO BRING IN YOUR OWN PHOTO ( HARD COPY OR HEADSHOT , ONLY YOURSELF IN IT ) SO IT CAN BE KEPT AS A FILE PHOTO . IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PHOTO THERE IS A $10.00 CHARGE TO TAKE ONE AT THE OFFICE . YOU THEN FILL OUT AN APPLICATION WITH YOUR BIO AND STATS SO A FILE CAN BE MADE UP . THE INTERVIEW EXPLAINS THAT ALL WORK IS NON-UNION AND YOU START OUT AS BACKGROUND OR EXTRA . THERE COULD BE AUDITIONS TO BE SENT OUT BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE DECENT ACTING SKILLS AND BE EXACTLY WHAT THE CASTING COMPANY IS LOOKING FOR WHICH IS WHY YOU WILL NEED HEADSHOTS . YES , WE SELL HEADSHOTS AND ALSO ACTING CLASSES . CLASSES ARE NOT MANDATORY . IF YOU WERE EVER FIXED UP ON A BLIND DATE THE FIRST THING YOU ASK IS - WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE ? . WELL, THAT'S THE WAY IT IS IN THIS BUSINESS , EVERYONE NEEDS HEADSHOTS . WE SEND THEM OUT TO CASTING DEPT'S FOR YOU AND ALSO USE EMAIL TO SEND OUT TO CASTINGS . WE WORK TO GET YOU JOBS , HOWEVER , JUST AS WITH ALL AGENCIES ARE GOVERNED MY THE INDUSTRY INSELF . WHEN IT'S BUSY SO ARE WE , WHEN IT'S SLOW SO ARE WE . THERE IS NO CONTROL OVER IT . NOW WHEN YOU ARE OFFERED A JOB YOU ARE EXPECTED TO SHOW UP ON TIME AND HAVE 2 FORMS OF ID , ALSO TO FILL OUT THE PAYMENT VOUCHER CORRECTLY . CHECKS COME FROM THE PAYROLL DEPT. OF THE PRODUCTION COMPANY AND WE GET 15 % , NOT 20 % FROM THE GROSS FROM EACH TALENT . IN THE CONTRACT THERE IS A TALENT HELP SHEET EXPLAINING MANY ASPECTS OF OUR OPERATION . I CAN'T HELP IT IF MANY PEOPLE DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO IS AS YOU ARE ASKED TO READ IT OVER IN FRONT OF THE AGENT BEFORE SIGNING . THERE IS NO PRESSURE , YOU CAN WALK OUT IF YOU WANT TO . MOST PROBLEMS OCCUR WHEN THE TALENT DOESN'T SHOW UP FOR THE JOB OR FAILS TO PAY US OUR COMMISSION . COME ON NOW , IS THAT OUR FAULT ? SOME PEOPLE COMPLAIN NO MATTER WHAT , THAT'S LIFE . I DO NOT CONDONE FALSE STATEMENTS FROM THESE PEOPLE AND IF I KNOW WHO THEY WERE I WOULD SUE THEM FOR SLANDER . WE REPRESENT OVER 400 PEOPLE WHE ALL HAVE GOTTEN JOBS , SOME WENT ON TO UNION STATUS THEREFORE MAKING UNION SALARY . THERE IS NO GUARENTEE OF STARDOM OR SPEAKING PARTS IN THIS INDUSTRY . WE JUST DO OUR BEST TO START YOU OUT WHICH IS EXPLAINED TO YOU IN THE INITIAL INTERVIEW . REMEMBER , YOU ARE JUST STARTING OUT , WHAT DO YOU EXPECT , TONS OF MONEY , SORRY , IT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT . SO TO SUM UP - THESE FALSE REPORTS POSTED ON RIP OFF HAVE NO SUBSTANCE AND I WISH THEY WOULD COME FORWARD WITH THEIR NAME AND PHONE NUMBER AND TALK SO ANY DISAGREEMENT CAN BE RESOLVED . ONE SIDE NOTE - PLEASE CHECK OUT SOME OTHER AGENCIES AND YOU WILL FIND THEIR PRICES ARE TOTALLY OUTRAGIOUS AND MOSTLY NO JOB OFFERS AT ALL . IN 2007 WE HAVE HAD OVER 200 JOB OFFERS FROM CASTING COMPANIES , LET'S SEE YOU FIND THOSE JOBS ON YOUR OWN OR WITHOUT A HEADSHOT . LET'S GET REAL FOLKS !!!

Many years ago I paid a fancy agency in New York for pictures because they said that they would find me work. They toll me I was going to be a super star. After my check was cashed they never called me again. I felt very foolish because I realized that they had no intention of finding me work in the industry. A few years later I met John at Universal Talent. I was afraid to get burn again but I took a chance anyway. I am glad I did, John booked me on a music video as a principal, got me several auditions and alot of extra work. He did for me every thing he said he would. I didn't get the big break but I became a working actor for the next two years. I stop acting when I met my wife and got married. After 9 years I decided to give acting another chance and six month ago I call John. I work as much as I want and owning my own business gives me the flexiblity I need. Just today worked on my 2nd wireless commercal for a major wireless company as a extra. I got $150 for the day as a non-SAG actor. Not the big money but it gets me exposure and experiance. I'm hopful I can get into the union to make even more. Universal calls me weekly to work on all types of projects; TV shows, movies and commercals. They have also gotten me several auditions for principal work. I'm no big star yet but that not Universal's fault they have gotten me in in front of casting directors and on the set of some of the biggest major motion pictures ever made. At the auditions and on the set it is up to me to shine. Universal has given me the oppurtunity to work in show business and to network with others who are in the business. They continue to give me the training and hopefully I will land that big role one day. As far as head shots go, they are necessary in show business just as business cards are a must if you want to work as a corporate professional. If a agency is getting me work why not get your headshot from the people they recommend? They may not have the nicest offices I have been to but as long as they have the contacts to keep me working it ok by me. After all I never got a call back from that first agency in New York and they had a real fancy office. I also have no problem with the agency earning a commision from me if the are getting me the job. I also believe in acting classes since very few people are naturals once the camera starts rolling. But if you don't, "just say no". I personally like the classes because the give me the confidence I need on auditions. I have had a good experiance working with Universal. Jack Nutley, Nj

Universal Talent IS LEGITIMATE

This is a rebuttal to what was so maliciously written against Universal Talent by RAEF on 10/13/2007. I worked with Universal Talent, yes, mostly for extra work: about 80-100 jobs though them from August 2003 - May 2006 and I have the payment vouchers to prove it! I stopped even my pursuit of acting in May 2006 because my job at THAT time and now my NEW unfortunate financial and geographic circumstances AT THIS CURRENT TIME have prevented me from doing so. But I was one of their most reliable people - always showing up on time to assignments. Some people, probably like the one who wrote the report to begin with, are not reliable and not willing to stay the course. Yes, it does cost $495 for your first 100 headshots and yes, Universal Keeps 50 of them, but that is so they could send you out on jobs - they cannot apply for you on your behalf without sending the production company a copy of your headshot. The idea that we are given the other 50 is so we could try on our own to find work. But let me tell you the honest truth - some people will accept your headshot without representation, but the majority of production companies will not accept your application without representation because when you just start out, nobody knows if you are for real or not and Universal's name IS Good. If it were not, I would not have gotten so many jobs through them - I actually had to turn away about 50 more such assignments because of other work constraints. In addition, the classes are NOT scams. Glen Vincent teaches them and HE is a professional actor for 30 years, who studied under one of the BIG 4: Sanford Meisner, and what I learned from him was extremely valuable. Granted that most of the work that you get from Universal is background work, but THEY TELL YOU THAT UP FRONT. But let me add that they sent me on a DOZEN or so auditions for principle work. I never won any of those parts, but at least I had the opportunity. I did, however, win parts, due to the training acquired in their classes, in both the Dukes of Hazzard Promotional Commercial, which appeared on the CMTV channel in 2005-2006 - I was a lab assistant, AND as an Army recruiter in the Independent Film, Forgiveness, which was made in 2005 and which was released in 2006. See my name, Joe Parascand, as Army recruiter #2 on IMDB.com In rapping this up, Universal is a great place in which to begin your acting career. They do all of the legwork for you and they never say that you cannot look for work for yourself. AND I WRITE MY NAME BECAUSE I AM TELLING THE TRUTH! Sincerely, JOE

#7UPDATE EX-employee responds

I worked for Universal for five months in 2006. I was living in New Jersey after fleeing Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. I was in experienced stage actor beforehand, but my head shots had been lost in the storm, so I got my new ones through the agency. They weren't the best and I'd rather not have an agency logo on my head shot, but they served the purpose. I also choose to take the classes, which I found to be very beneficial. The acting coach is one of the best in the business and my resume has benifited from having studied with him. I got quite a few jobs on movies like Music and Lyrics and television shows like Rescue Me and CSI:NYC. When I moved back to New Orleans last December, many of my friends told me that they had seen me in a Rescue Me bar scene. The 15% commision is hard when you only make $75, but I knew about it from the begining. All in all, there were no surprise fees or anything that I didn't know about from the get go. Just for the record, I'm not writing this to get in good with John and Jim. I now live over 1000 miles away and will not be working for Universal again.

A COUPLE YEARS AGO I CHECKED INTO SIGNING UP WITH BARBIZON AGENCY. THEY WANTED TO CHARGE ME 2100 DOLLARS FOR PICTURES AND CLASSESS!(RIDICULOUS). NEXT I WENT TO ACTORS REP AND THEY DID NOT PRODUCE ANY WORK FOR ME. THEN I CHECKED INTO YET ANOTHER AGENCEY AND THEY WANTED TO CHARGE ME A MONTHLY FEE TO SEND ME OUT ON WORK THEY MAY OR MAY NOT GET FOR ME. SO BY THE TIME I FOUND UNIVERSAL TALENT I WAS A LITTLE GUN SHY!! BUT I AM SO HAPPY I DECIDED TO SIGN WITH THEM. I HAVE WORKED ON SOPRANOS LAW AND ORDER, RESCUE ME, WAR OF THE WORLDS, WORLD TRADE CENTER I HAVE DONE A COUPLE OF COMMERCIALS WHICH PAY VERY WELL, NOT TO MENTION UNIVERSAL TALENT MANAGED TO GIVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY BECOME A SAG UNION MEMBER. THEY GAVE ME THE CHANCE TO PURSUE MY GOALS. ANYONE THAT BAD MOUTHS UNIVERSAL TALENT HAS NOT DONE THEIR HOMEWORK.

I am an actor with universal talent and have had only good experiences with this company. They fulfilled their promises in a very professional and timely manner. i have gotten tons of acting jobs all over ny and nj. THe photo package, which any one starting in this field absolutely needs, came out great, i was very pleased. The acting coach is very experienced and knows his stuff. Anyone who has never acted before needs clasess. The bottom line is this. You need photos and you need classes to get your start in the acting field. And anyone who says different, does not know what the heck they are talking about!

I have experienced a different relationship with Universal Talent. I was never told I had to do the acting classes; it was available if I wanted it. I did get headshots taken, but I believe it's something you need for the business. I don't think they have represented themselves inaccurately. They tell you that you'll be doing background, commercials and if you're lucky a speaking part. It's a start in the business and you can't start at the top. It gives one an opportunity to understand what the business of acting is all about and what one might need to persue it further. I have found Universal Talent to be easy to work with, as they are patient with my ever changing schedule and call me for work almost every week. I don't feel I've been ripped off. Originally I thought I would work enough to cover what I had put in, but I've made much more and I get a kick out of seeing myself on t.v. or the big screen. Kathi

THE CLASS IS DESIGNED FOR THE BEGINNER TO GET A FEEL FOR ACTING AND I DO NEED TO HEAR A READING FROM EACH PERSON TO DETERMINE IF THEY ARE READY FOR ANY AUDITIONS THAT MIGHT COME UP. WE GET MANY JOBS FOR OUR CLIENTS AND COLLECT A 15% COMMISSION, NOT 20% AS STATED BY THIS QUACK . IT IS NOT OUR FAULT THAT THIS PERSON OR OTHERS SHOW UP LATE OR NOT AT ALL FOR OUR JOB OFFERS OR NOT PAY US COMMISSIONS AND THIS IS GROUNDS FOR NON REPRESENTATION. THE MORE RELIABLE AND AVAILABLE A PERSON NATURALLY THE MORE JOB OFFERS THEY WILL GET. NOT EVERYONE QUALIFIES FOR EVERY JOB AND I DO STATE THAT ALL JOBS ARE NON UNION AND THAT EACH JOB HAS A DIFFERENT START TIME AND LOCATAION. JOBS PAY FROM $75.00 AND CAN GO AS HIGH AS 300 - $400. YES, SOME OF OUR PEOPLE HAVE GOTTEN WAIVERED OR A ONE LINE SENTENCE OR EVEN SPEAKING PARTS AND THEREFORE UNION PAY WHICH IS MORE THAN NON UNION PAY. SO TO SUM IT UP THIS PERSON LISTING WHAT I CALL A FALSE REPORT IS JUST VENTING OFF SOME STEAM , HAS NO EXPERIENCE AND DIDN'T SHOW UP FOR OUR JOB OFFERS. ALL INFORMATION IS FULLY EXPLAINED IN PRINT AND NO ONE IS FORCED TO SIGN ANYTHING THEY DON'T WANT TO SIGN. I URGE ALL INTERESTED TO COME IN TO THE OFFICE AND SEE FOR YOURSELF ALL THE JOBS WE HAVE HAD IN THE RECENT PAST AND ALL THE PEOPLE WE HAVE SENT OUT ON THEM. YOU CAN EVEN SEE THE CHECKS THAT PEOPLE HAVE NOT PICKED UP YET. WE ARE NOT A SCAM, WE GET PEOPLE JOBS, IT IS NOT A RESPONSIBILITY FOR UNIVERSAL TALENT TO GET PEOPLE WAIVERS OR ONE LINE SENTENCES OR SPEAKING PARTS AS THIS HAPPENS ON THE SET OR ON AN AUDITION .

I AM JIM FROM UNIVERSAL TALENT AND I AM HERE TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT. WE ARE A LICENCED ACTING IN NJ AND FULLY ADHERE TO ALL STATE LAWS. A CLIENT RESPONDS TO AN AD OR REFERRAL AND SETS UP AN APPOINTMENT. THEY FILL OUT AN APPLICATION AND EITHER BRING IN A PHOTO OF THEMSELVES OR WE TAKE A FILE PHOTO HERE IN THE OFFICE. I FULLY EXPLAIN THE INDUSTRY TO THEM EXPLAINING THAT ALL JOBS ARE NON UNION MOSTLY BACKGROUND WORK IN MOVIES, TV SHOWS AND COMMERCIALS ALTHOUGH WE DO GET SOME PROMOS AS WELL AS PRINT WORK . WE HAVE BOOKED ALL THE MAJOR TV SHOWS AND MOVIES IN NYC. I ALSO EXPLAIN WHAT IT TAKES TO GET INTO SAG UNION AND THAT EVERYONE STARTS OUT IN BACKGROUND. JOBS ARE SPECIFIC AS TO THE TYPE OF PERSON NEEDED THEREFORE CASTING AGENTS WILL NEED TO SEE WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE VIA HEADSHOTS OF WHICH WE USE EMAILS FROM THE DISK OF ALL THE SHOTS TAKEN. WE ALSO USE THE 8X10 HEADSHOT FOR MAILINGS AND THE CLIENT GETS HEADSHOTS FOR THEIR OWN USE. ANYONE WHO IS IN THIS INDUSTRY KNOWS THAT HEAD SHOTS ARE NECCESSARY. MOST PEOPLE THAT COME HERE HAVE NO SKILL OR EXPERIENCE THEREFORE WE OFFER A PACKAGE OF A 36 SHOT PHOTO SHOOT AND 4 ACTING CLASSES , 2 HOURS EACH WED.
