From July 15 to 20, 2000, United Van Lines packed and moved my household goods. I had around $90,000 worth of missing items and another $92,000 worth of damage. On top of that, things in the house that I was renting were damaged or stolen.

From the beginning of the move, I knew there would be a problem, but there was nothing I could do because it was arranged by the federal government. The United Van Lines driver showed up late and when he arrived he had no help. You see, rather than pay for United contract labor, the driver, John Loos, decided to pay day laborers from a temp agency.

Two of the men that finally showed up on the first day of moving, cased the possessions in the house and then demanded the driver pay them each additional monies for transportation. The driver refused and called security. He learned that one of them men was the brother of a man who was under investigation by the FBI for stealing from household goods shipments.

I was very concerned about the safety of the shipment and called Quality Control. They said to just note it at the other end (delivery was 11/8/00) and remember that United was in breach of contract because they did not fulfill the terms of the contract by meeting the moving deadlines.

I informed United immediately and filed my property damage and loss claims which have not been settled to this date. Also, despite my several calls to United Van Lines they have never mailed me a claim so that I can claim the property damage and theft for the house that I was renting.

BBB said UVL was OK and they took care of their complaints!

I have tried for almost two years to get TMO to punish United Van Lines. I finally got a hold of Cheryl Jones, (800) 762-7186 (x758). She told me she just got the folder on my file but it's too late to punish them because they have a time limit, which is past. IT AIN'T OVER!

I should point out that I checked with the Better Business Bureau first because I was so nervous about leaving my things in the care of UVL. The BBB said UVL took care of their complaints. That the company was OK. Not this one, that's for sure. How can this be with all the complaints on the Internet

Did you happen to file a report with TMO who scheduled the move? They are the ones whom you need to speak with about claims against movers. The process the claims and contact the moving company. You will never get back the full amount of the damage, etc. because the lowest possible estimate will be paid. I am just speaking from experience.

UNITED VAN LINES acknowledged my e-mail, but never responded.

United Van Lines is responsible for the theft and damage of about $4,500 of property. Their agents ripped off property from the house I rented, which I was billed for. Their driver, Mr. Loos, signed a guarantee note promising responsibility for the house and the items.

They receiving agent, S&M Moving and Storage assigned Doug Oakley, Quality Assurance to the case and he did not get back to me timely. I had to deal with the General Manager, who did finally get me response but never informed the military, as promised, that I had informed her of the loss and damage within the time limitation (of which I have proof), forcing me to handle my claim through my insurance company only.

I have now had my vehicle broken into. I can not use my garage because I have to store all the broken items and I am getting fines from my Home Owner Association. I have lived in my house for a year and four months and still have not settled in.

I want them to pay for my losses, which are now over $187,500 as of February 18, 2002.
