My experience with this independent U-Haul dealer was simply beyond belief. I reserved a truck for an in-town rental. When my husband and I arrived to pick it up, the manager demanded my SSN to complete the transaction, which I refused. He indicated that he wouldn't rent the truck w/o this, and would charge the Visa card I'd given him by phone if we chose not to provide this information. When we demanded to see any U-Haul policy stating this, it was clearly written that a driver's lic & credit card are sufficient. I told him that he could hold my AMEX card while I had the truck, which I then turned over to the front desk. The manager then stated that he "didn't want the responsibility" of holding this card, and returned it, confirming that it WOULD NOT BE CHARGED. A week and 1/2 later--of course--a charge appears on this card.

I've already contacted AMEX to initiate a chargeback--as the manager has nothing from me indicating that this card was to be charged, I've been assured by AMEX that it won't be a problem. Long story short? Don't use U-Haul, but definitely don't use the 5701 N. 60th St. (Omaha) location. The staff was rude, uninformed about their own policies, and had insulting political material posted openly in customer areas.
