Over a month ago I placed a reservation by phone with my local U-Haul. I told them I wanted a truck for August 2nd and I gave them my name, address and credit card number to hold the reservation. They then gave me a confirmation number, which I wrote down.

On August 2nd I arrive at the U-Haul location and discover that they don't have my reservation. They say that neither my name nor my confirmation number are in their system. I then tell them that I checked my credit card statement and I was already charged by U-Haul (I figured it was an advance security deposit), so they had to have my information. They continually insist that I don't have a reservation and that they don't have any trucks available.

Finally an employee makes a call to regional or corporate office. He then tells me that I had a reservation for July 19th and I rented a truck that day. I was out of town that day and DID NOT rent a truck. I ask him to show me where I signed for a truck. He checks their files and pulls out a receipt with my name, address and credit card information on it and someone else's signature!!!

When I asked if they checked any ID's he says that they would have checked a driver's license and the credit card. But that would have been impossible! Even if someone wanted to commit an identity theft, how would they know that U-Haul had a reservation for that date (it wasn't even the date I reserved).

I believe that the U-Haul employees sheduled me for the wrong date, then rented the truck to someone else when I didn't show, but still used my information. Now somebody has a receipt with all of my information on it! On top of all that, I never did get a truck and the U-Haul employees offered no reparations. I ended up being lucky enough to find a truck at a local Ryder location (which cost twice as much), but at least I got my move done.

If the location were following proper procedures they would have never rented the truck on your reservation. First of all they should have immedently noticed that the name on the drivers license was different & stopped there. Second we are to have the card present at time of rental & swipe it even if it was given over the phone. This should have never happened to you. As the previous poster stated, you need to go to the police, file a report & request a copy of the July 19th rental contract with the forged signature on it. Then contact your credit card company and report the incident and request that they do a charge back and also request for the numaber to be changed. The number should not have printed on the rental contract but to be safe have it changed. The actual Uhaul dealer will probably refuse to refund you the money back. Ask them for their marketing company phone number. If they refuse then contact 800-go-uhaul, they should be able to give you the approraite numbers to call. Again if they followed the proper rental procedures this would never have happened. I wish you the best of luck & I see no reason as to why you should not receive a full refund of the monies charged to your card.

Have you since changed the account number on your credit card?

This is terrible. This is something you have to go to the police with, to file a Theft Report. Call me synical but I think maybe someone on the U-Haul staff might have been a part of the whole scam. Have you received a refund? It is also important that you call your credit card THEFT HOTLINE. Tell them your card account number was stolen and used by someone else through the neglect of this irresponsible company. You can't let them get away with this fraud. If you have not obtained copies of that receipt for July 19, with the forged signature, I recommend that you get them. There's something strange about it, because how would the other individual who forged your signature know that your card was available for thieving in the first place? This is what leads me to believe the staff might have decided to help out a friend. This could be happening to others as well. Forging your signature, and illegaly using your credit card are serious criminal offenses. Please contact law enforcement. Tell them you want a Report filled out for the record, AND THAT YOU WANT U-HAUL INVESTIGATED, this while you demand that charge get removed from your account. Make sure U-Haul gets a copy of that POLICE REPORT!!! If I were you, I would change ALL of my account numbers for credit, checking and license. Treat it like theft. This is theft. I cannot emphasize enough that you need to report to your local law enforcement. I hope that you can find some resolution, and possibly a refund or removal of the charges from your account.
