UHAUL RENTED ME A TRUCK THAT WAS DANGEROUS TO OPERATE AND DID NOTHING TO HELP ME WHEN I WAS STRANDED .....

MY NAME IS JAMES VANDERPOOL AND UHAUL RENTED ME A TRUCK THAT WAS HAZARDOUS TO ME,MY FAMILY, AND EVERYONE ELSE ON THE ROAD.

I RESERVED MY UHAUL TRUCK SEVERAL DAYS PRIOR TO MY MOVING DATE OF 10/31/02 SO THAT I WOULD BE ASSURED THAT THE VEHICLE THAT I WAS TO USE WOULD BE CLEAN, SERVICED,

INSPECTED AND ROAD READY WHEN I PICKED IT UP. THE VEHICLE THAT I WAS PLACED IN WAS NOWHERE NEAR ROAD READY, OR ROAD WORTHY FOR THAT MATTER.

THE TROUBLE BEGAN ON FRIDAY 11/01/02 AS WE WERE INSPECTING THE LIGHTS PRIOR TO LEAVING ON OUR 750 MILE MOVE.

THE FIRST THING THAT WE FOUND WAS THAT THERE WERE NO TAIL LIGHTS,OR BRAKE LIGHTS ON NEITHER OUR TRUCK NOR THE CAR CARRIER THAT OUR NOW PACKED VEHICLE WAS LOADED ON.

UPON CALLING UHAUL WE WERE NOTIFIED THAT THEY WOULD TRY TO HAVE SOMEONE COME TO THE HOUSE TO CHECK OUT THE TROUBLE AND GET US ON OUR WAY.

THE SERVICE MAN THAT ARRIVED APPROX. AN HOUR LATER LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE AND TOLD US THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO CALL HIS BOSS AS HE DID NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT ELECTRONICS.

ANOTHER HOUR PASSED BEFORE THE SERVICE TECH. AND HIS BOSS ARRIVED AND BEGAN WORKING ON THE TRUCK AGAIN. APPROX. 2 HOURS LATER IT BEGAN TO GET DARK AND ...

THEY GAVE UP FOR THE NIGHT. THE SERVICE TECH. CALLED UHAUL AND THEY TOLD US THAT ALL THEY COULD DO WAS TO PUT US IN A HOTEL FOR THE NIGHT AND TRY AGAIN IN THE MORNING.

THEY STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT PAY FOR THE MOTEL BUT THAT WE WOULD BE REIMBURSED WHEN WE RETURNED THE EQUIP. AT OUR DESTINATION.

UPON EXPLAINING TO THE REPRESENTATIVE THAT WE WERE NOW OUT THE COST OF THE ROOM THAT WE HAD RESERVED I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO ABOUT THAT BUT

THAT THEY WOULD PAY FOR THE ROOM THAT WE STAYED IN WHILE THE TRUCK WAS BEING REPAIRED. COST OF ROOM THAT WE NEVER USED $50.15

NOW ON TO DAY TWO WHERE WE HAD TO WAIT ON THE MECHANIC TO CALL US AND GO MEET HIM AT THE HOUSE SO THAT WE COULD DROP THE TRUCK OFF AT HIS SHOP FOR REPAIR.

THREE HOURS LATER WE RECEIVED A CALL THAT THE TRUCK WAS READY AND WE WENT TO PICK IT UP TO BEGIN THE SECOND PHASE OF THE NIGHTMARE.

ON THE SECOND DAY WE STARTED OUR TRIP,AGAIN,FOUR HOURS LATER THAN WE HOPED AND ARE NOW 24 HOURS BEHIND SCHEDULE. APPROXIMATELY THREE HOURS INTO THE TRIP WE NOTICED THAT

THE TRUCK WAS LOSING POWER AND COULD NOT GO UP EVEN THE SLIGHTEST HILL AT OVER 30 MILES PER HOUR ON A MAJOR INTERSTATE HIGHWAY.

SINCE IT WAS GETTING DARK WE DECIDED TO PULL OFF IN STAUNTON VIRGINIA TO STAY FOR ANOTHER ENEXPECTED NIGHT IN A MOTEL.

UPON CHECKING IN TO THE MOTEL WE AGAIN CALLED THE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE HOTLINE TO REPORT THE TROUBLE AT WHICH TIME WE WERE TOLD THAT WE WOULD GET A CALL FIRST

THING IN THE MORNING FROM THE GARAGE AND THEY WOULD LET US KNOW WHAT TO DO. AT 9:30 AM THE FOLLOWING MORNING WE HAD TO CALL ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AS WE HAD NOT HEARD FROM

THEM AND WE WERE TOLD THAT A SERVICE TECH. WOULD BE OUT "WITHIN THE HOUR". TWO AND A HALF HOURS LATER WE DECIDED TO CALL AGAIN AND WERE PUT ON HOLD FOR 35 MINUTES

BEFORE HANGING UP AND TRYING AGAIN TO GET TO OUR DESTINATION. WE TRAVELLED APPROXIMATELY 95 MILES BEFORE THE TRUCK WAS AGAIN UNABLE TO GO UP HILL AT A REASONABLE

RATE OF SPEED SO WE AGAIN CALLED THE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE HOTLINE. AFTER DIALING THE "HOTLINE" NUMBER WE WERE IMMEDIATELY PLACED ON HOLD FOR 45 MINUTES ONLY TO BE TOLD

THAT SINCE THIS WAS A REPEAT CALL WE WOULD BE PLACED IN LINE FOR THE PERSON THAT IS IN CHARGE OF SENDING THE SERVICE TECH. TO ASSIST US.

WHEN THE PERSON FINALLY ANSWERED TO CALL WE GAVE HIM OUR REFERENCE NUMBER THAT WE WERE GIVEN EARLIER IN THE DAY AND TOLD HIM THAT NO MECHANIC EVER SHOWED UP

SO WE DECIDED TO GIVE IT ANOTHER TRY. AT THAT TIME THE "GENTLEMAN" PROCEEDED TO CHEW ME OUT FOR LEAVING THE FIRST LOCATION

AS THE MECHANIC REPORTED THAT HE DID GO TO OUR MOTEL AND WE WERE ALREADY GONE. I WAS VERY RUDELY TOLD THAT I WAS COSTING THE COMPANY MONEY TO WHICH

I RESPONDED WITH THE FACT THAT I WAS THE ONE THAT HAD PAID OVER $650.00 TO RENT THIS FAULTY VEHICLE AND THAT IT WAS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO CORRECT THE SITUATION.

UPON EXPLAINING THAT TO THE MAN ON THE PHONE I WAS PROMPTLY HUNG UP ON INSTEAD OF BEING HELPED. I THEN TRIED TO CALL THE GARAGE BACK TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY PLANNED TO

DO BUT NO ONE WOULD ANSWER THA PHONE. UPON CALLING THE HOTLINE NUMBER AGAIN I WAS ONCE AGAIN PLACE "IN LINE" FOR THE NEXT SERVICE REP.

AFTER ANOTHER 35 MINUTES ON HOLD WE AGAIN GAVE UP AND STARTED ON OUR WAY IN THE FAULTY VEHICLE. NIGHT THREE OF THE MOVE WE HAD MADE IT, SLOWLY,

TO THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTHERN PENNSYLVANIA WHERE THE TRUCK WAS NOW GOING UP HILLS,IN THE DARK, AT A STAGGERRING 15 MILES PER HOUR WITH MY FAMILY FOLLOWING BEHIND ME IN

ANOTHER VEHICLE WITH THEIR EMERGENCY FLASHERS ON AND TRAFFIC FLYING BY.AT APPROXIMATELY 7:30 PM MY FIANCE WAS HYSTERICLE AS TRUCKS WERE COMING DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO

HITTING THE BACK OF HER VEHICLE. WE THEN SEARCHED FOR THE NEAREST MOTEL FOR YET ANOTHER UNSCHEDULED OUT OF POCKET STAY IN A MOTEL AND ANOTHER ROUND OF CALLS TO

THE "HOTLINE". WE WERE TOLD THAT THERE WOULD BE A SERVICE TECH. CALLING OUR ROOM AT 7:30 AM TO GET SPECIFICS AND DIRECTIONS TO OUR LOCATION. AT 9:00 AM. I CALLED THE

GARAGE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO CONTACT US ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT HE KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT AS HE HAD NOTHING ON HIS FAX MACHINE FROM UHAUL SO I GAVE HIM MY NUMBER SO THAT HE

COULD CONTACT UHAUL AND CALL ME BACK. THE MAN FROM THE GARAGE CALLED ME BACK AND EXPLAINED TO ME THAT HIS ROADSIDE SERVICE MAN WAS ON HIS WAY IN AND THAT HE WOULD

SEND HIM RIGHT OVER WHEN HE CAME IN.AT THIS TIME I HAD MY FIANCE GO AHEAD AS WE WERE ONLY A SHORT DISTANCE FROM OUR DESTINATION AND THAT I WOULD WAIT FOR THE MECHANIC. TWO

HOUR PASSED AND I HAD TO CHECK OUT OF THE ROOM AND WAIT IN THE TRUCK FOR THE MECHANIC WHO SHOWED UP ABOUT 30 MINUTES LATER.

DAY FOUR OF OUR TRIP, THE MECHANIC ASKS ME WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND I TELL HIM THAT I THINK THE FUEL PUMP IS FAULTY SO HE PROCEEDS TO PULL THE PUMP.UPON PULLING THE

PUMP HE TELLS ME THAT IT IS THE WORST THAT HE HAD EVER SEEN AS THE FILTER WAS SO CLOGGED THAT IT HAD COLLAPSED AND SUCKED UP INTO THE PUMP ITSELF CAUSING THE PUMP TO

COMPLETELY BURN OUT. AT THIS TIME HE ASKED WHERE WE HAD DRIVEN FROM AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A MIRICLE THAT WE MADE IT THIS FAR AFTER WHICH HE REPLACED THE PUMP AND HAD

ME BACK ON THE ROAD TO FINALLY FINISH MY MOVE. AT THIS TIME I WAS OUT THE COST OF THE EQUIPMENT,AND FOUR DAYS LODGING AND MEALS OF WHICH UHAUL WAS ONLY REIMBURSING ME

FOR ONE. UPON REACHING MY DESTINATION I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE UHAUL CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER TO LODGE MY COMPLAINT ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT IF I HAD A COMPLAINT I

NEEDED TO TAKE IT UP WITH THE MANAGER AT THE DROP OFF SITE WHEN I RETURNED THE VEHICLES. WHEN I REACHED THE DROP OFF SITE AND TALKED TO THE MANAGER I WAS TOLD THAT

THERE WAS NO FORMS FOR ME TO LODGE MY COMPLAINT NOR COULD HE REIMBURSE ME MY OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES SO I WAS S.O.L.

THE COST OF MY MOVE BREAKS DOWN AS FOLLOWS:

FAULTY EQUIPMENT RENTAL-$664.52

MOTELS,NOT INCLUDING MEALS-$255.80

GASOLINE-$262.31

TOTAL OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE-$1182.63

THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE FACT THAT I ARRIVED AT OUR DESTINATION TWO DAYS LATE CAUSING ME TO MISS TWO DAYS AT MY NEW JOB.

I FEEL THAT I AM OWED AN APOLOGY AND COMPLETE REIMBURSMENT OF ALL OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES FOR THIS FIASCO.

UHAUL WAS NEGLIGENT IN SENDING US OUT ON THE ROAD IN A VEHICLE THAT WAS NO WHERE NEAR ROADWORTHY AND THEIR HANDLING OF THE SITUATION WAS COMPLETELY WITHOUT REGARD

FOR OUR SAFETY OR WELLBEING. MOVING YOUR FAMILY IS A VERY STRESSFUL SITUATION AND FOR THE "GENTLEMAN" AT THE GARAGE TO TREAT US SO POORLY AND HANG UP ON A FAMILY THAT IS IN

NEED OF ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE IS SERIOUSLY NEGLIGENT IN HIS DUTIES. I AM IN POSSESSION OF ALL SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION FROM THE MOVE INCLUDING THE REFERENCE

NUMBERS THAT I WAS GIVEN EACH TIME I REPORTED THE MECHANICAL PROBLEMS TO THE HOTLINE.
