In April 2000 my boyfriend and I moved from New York to Wyoming. We rented a 10 ft MiniMover from the location listed above. We thought...'Uhaul has been around for years, they should be fine.' We were wrong! When we picked up the Uhaul we were assured it was checked out and approved for the trip. *sigh of relief* Good, now all we have to do is load and take the long drive. We loaded and we were on our way.

After about 2 hours of driving, coming through the NJ turnpike we hear a LOUD noise. "..What was that?!!" I screamed with a look of panic on my face. "..I don't know." the only words my boyfriend could offer me. Not sure whats wrong I look out the mirror and to the front of the van. Everything seems fine. "...I'm having a hard time stopping." "...What??" I ask.Oh my God, we almost hit a car...a car almost hits us... All my boyfriend can do is look at me... "Oh no.We need to get off of this road!" So my boyfriend slowly and carefully gets us off the highway and to a gas station. My boyfriend calls Uhaul."..Where are we?" He ask, we look around for signs. I go inside the gas station.. "Can you tell me where we are?" "Parsipeney(spelling)NJ." So, I go and let my boyfriend know. Uhaul tells us to call them back. We do and they send us to the only hotel in close distance. "...we have no brakes..I'm scared." "It's ok sweetie." I held to my seat belt as we drove down the road. Thankfully we left NY 11pm.Thankfully it's only 1 am..not to many cars. So we get a very low class motel. We are told someone will call us in the morning. So, sure enough the phone rings. They are sending a tow truck to pick up the van and take it to the shop. We go with it. Here we find out that they are going to have to give us a 14 ft truck. I hear the guy tell someone..." I am giving them another truck! This one will kill them!" ...Oh my God, it must of been real bad. So they have my boyfriend help them swap loads. They told him it was the backing plate on the brake, it had broke OFF..OFF! No longer there... Geez,we are so lucky! So we get in the 14ft and start going again.Scared to DEATH that something will happen. In IL we get pulled over by a state trooper. The tag is expired! *sigh* So we get a warning to give to Uhaul and another other state officers that might stop us. OH but wait... Several officers show up. We need to search the van. Yep..right there on the side of the road they go through our stuff.. I feel like a criminal! "..we have been having uhauls going through the state transporting drugs. We had to check." Oh geezzzzzz just because we use Uhaul we might be caryying drugs!! So we get to Wyoming..just barely..and with a lot less money because the 14ft went through a lot more gas than the 10ft. I had to borrow extra money from my sister and dad and my boyfriends mom to get the extra we needed.Extra food, extra motel, extra gas..Terrible.

Uhaul was rude and didn't want to help fix things. Finally we got a 200 dollar check and some coupons for Uhaul(like we want to use Uhaul again!).. We could have been killed because of the first van. We were searched like criminals with the second. We lost money in gas and such. It was terrible... Our lil saying is..."YOU FALL if YOU HAUL with UHAUL!" Please be ware people! Check your moving vans as best you can... If in doubt dont use the van. It's not worth your life!

I wont use Uhaul for another move like this again!

Despite one problem, Uhaul did right by me

Hello, I read your experience and I am sorry to hear that. I think my positive experience with Uhaul had much to do with the dealer that I dealt with. When I made my reservation, I requested a new truck with new tires, I told the nice lady behind the counter that I was driving cross country alone and into some pretty desolate places, that I needed something very reliable. She agreed and made sure that I got a new truck. Once on the road, as I was driving through a desolate highway, a man kept following me. I stopped at the first gas station that I saw and he stopped too. He told me that I had a tire blow out and I thanked him. It turns out the wight of the truck and load was completely on the second set, this is why I didn't notice it. I called the costumer service department and they had a man and his girlfriend come out and replace my tire for me. This was a Sunday afternoon and I had interrupted their bbq. Still, they were really nice and he whent as far as checking all my fluids as well. I made it to my destination without any more problems. Upon returning the truck, the people on the other end were really nice too. All in all, I had a great experience with Uhaul. I think that much of it had to do with the dealers as well as my requesting a new truck.

Issues with U-Haul...

Hi Kim, We had issues with U-Haul when we moved to Buffalo--nothing as frightening as yours, but problems getting us our equipment at the scheduled time that also resulted in our having to spend the night at a hotel (an un-budgeted moving expense). We phoned the company after returning the truck & were told there was nothing they could do, but after we complained quite a bit, wrote letters, etc., we too were offered U-Haul coupons as recompense. And our reaction was the same as yours--as if we're going to use U-Haul again. What I wish we'd done was this--and anyone considering this company might take heed--complain directly to the operator of the outlet when you return the truck. I didn't do this because it wasn't this poor guy's fault, it was the outlet from which we rented the truck, etc., etc., etc. Some friends of ours who moved the same weekend had to drive from NYC to Vermont to Buffalo in June with no A/C because it broke on their rental truck. She complained directly to the manager of the return outlet (same one as mine) & was reimbursed for a good deal of the cost of the rental (I don't remember how much exactly; it was a few years ago). Anyway, that doesn't much help you, but it might help others in the future. And I'm really glad you got to Wyoming in one piece!
