I bought a Toshiba DVD/VCR Combo SD-V28OU on June 10, 2002 - the power supply completely died on July 29th, 2002. Amazon.com won't let me return it because it was past the 30 days for returns. From the Toshiba site I was directed to the only authorized dealer around here. I dropped it off there, and was given an estimate of 14 days. When I didn't hear anything, and didn't hear anything, I tried to call - unsuccessfully. I emailed their service department, and my email was forwarded.
Finally, almost 30 days after I dropped it off, someone left a phone message that my unit was "ready for pickup". I drive all the way out there, and am told:
1) The unit is not fixed, but unrepairable.
2) That "failure is typical of lightning or surge damage"
3) It is not covered under Toshiba's 90 day warranty.
This is not acceptable. I spent my hard-earned money on this for a Father's Day present to my husband. Obviously the unit was defective. There was no storm, no lightening. And if there was a surge, it didn't affect our computers. I notice, however, that there was no big warning on the box requiring the use of a surge protector in any case! When the power supply died, there wasn't even have a way for the tape or dvd to be ejected, so I will also have to pay a month's worth of extended viewing fees for a newly released dvd to Blockbuster!
The customer support department has been completely unresponsive. This is the second time that I have purchased an item from Toshiba that has died (the last was a notebook computer whose motherboard blew a few days past warrantee). This time, the unit was only 6 weeks old and there is no excuse for it not to be replaced with a better quality unit or for me to get my money back. The warrantee is for 90 days! Clearly, this is a strategy for them not to have to honor it...
