I am in my 80’s and it was time to reduce my clothing inventory.  I have long been a collector of high end womens’ couture, and was once featured in the Jacksonville Journal as one of their “10 Best Dressed Women in Jacksonville”. I had heard of The Snob resale store in San Marco and decided to trust them with the sale of some of my most treasured items.

The first item I left was a gray haute couture Halston cape. I was, however disturbed that the owner, Rula Carr refused to provide a receipt.  When pressed, she finally scribbled “halston cape” on her business card.  At the same time, she insisted I sign some sort of terms sheet but had some excuse as to why she could not give me a copy.  Many months passed with no sale so I requested return of my cape and said I was coming to pick it up. Suddenly Rula informed me she sold It!  What a coincidence. Based on her seemingly fair selling price of my cape, I trusted her with more items.  Huge mistake! It’s a classic scam to gain someone’s trust in the beginning only to rip them off later.

Again no receipt. When I wouldn’t leave my things the girl at the counter wrote on a phone message pad ‘“6 Items”. No description. One of those items was a Haute Couture Valentino vintage color block top made of premium quality suede, leather and.snakeskin. It had a lining of 40% cupro & 60% acetate.  Again many months passed and nothing sold.  I called to pick up my 6 items and was told that Rula was out of town and she “had the list of items with her.” Apparently, they thought they could fool me (as I’m elderly) regarding computer access to shop records.

I was made to wait THREE WEEKS until Rula “returned” and I came in the next day. Rula gave me a sealed envelope and said she “just sold” my Valentino. What a coincidence! I asked what price she sold it for.  She answered that since it was “not made of leather but entirely of ACETATE” it was only worth $150.00  (my share $75.00).  Rula went on to explain that the entire top was “fake leather”  that was made to look like leather.  See photo of top. This was so obviously a scam that I wanted to warn others not to do business with her.  STAY AWAY!
