The Bread and Board Laura Phillips Edgecombe Refusing to pay me for services rendered at Jazz Fest 2018 Jacksonville Florida
I was recruited as an independent contractor to work for The Bread and Board as backstage catering at Hemming Park for Jazz Fest. We had agreed to a rate of $14/hr working three 14 hour days. I have text messages, Google maps showing me at the location for those hours, and numerous witnesses I worked with who will confirm this as well as a signed I9 form that should be on file with the company. We had agreed in writing that payment was going to be two weeks (14 days) from the time of the event in the form of a paycheck for services rendered. Leading up to that 14 day mark I stopped by the store asking for a status update on my paycheck. Everyone began giving me the run-around stating all check inquiries are to be directed through Laura. She was very punctual in her text responses while I was working for her, but now that I'm asking about payment she has gone completely silent ignoring me and refusing to respond for a week now. I have gone to the store location since, and all anyone says is to contact Laura. Now nobody is responding. I have no choice but to consider this as intent to refuse payment, and will be filing a complaint with the Florida Department of Labor as well as any additional action required. I am not having 42 hours in three days stolen from me by an unscrupulous business like this one that thinks it can just ignore people away, and doesn't have to pay them for work performed.

As a restaurant and catering business they are great. I would recommend anyone to go there for lunch and dinner. My personal issues with the company should not be taken as discouragement from eating there. They serve amazing food that I personally thoroughly enjoy, and I will be dining there in the future. They have fantastic cooks, great and friendly staff, and by all accounts are a great and respectable company that provided excellent catering for Jazz Fest which greatly pleased the city of Jacksonville. After a week of not being able to get a response from any staff I was finally able to get in contact with the appropriate manager by catching them at the restaurant. They were waiting on the city to pay them for the event before cutting checks, and I just received payment finally. No valid explanation was given for why they weren't responding to any of my calls and texts for a whole week, but regardless, the matter is now resolved favorably.
My intent was to bring attention to the fact sometimes employers contract work out without having the funds to pay their contractors up front, and cutting off communication when payment becomes late is not a good way to handle things. I had no choice but to assume they were purposefully avoiding me for some reason, possibly because they did not intend to pay me, and that is why I filed this report. Communication is key in these situations when people's finances are being impacted. I had a rent check bounce because I was told I would be paid two weeks after the event, and then they stopped responding altogether. Any kind of an update would have cleared my concern. If communication hadn't stopped I would not have filed this report. Again, I would highly recommend anyone to eat at Bread and Board, and to use their catering services. Their food is amazing, and this matter has been resolved favorably.
